There was a 3 foreigner rule back then... Scottish Irish and Welsh were all classed as foreign players
Kanchelskis and Schmeichel missing... Irwin too
Paulo Futre at his peak first leg if I remember correctly
The first leg, because of a row involving their chairman Jesus Gil, wasn't televised. I remember listening it to it in the radio and we were well in the game until two very late goals made it 3-0.

I just meant more the lack of defenders. Was it a 352? Or did Giggs play left back? Strange formation for 1991 but I guess SAF had go balls to the wall at 3-0 down from the first leg

i remember the '91 encounter v well
Futre and Schuster did Utd big time
was a v good atleti side
I remember this game well. They equalised with a freekick from Bernd Shuster.

We scored at OT after a minute didn't we but he scored with a low free kick early on in the second half to kill off the tie. If I recall we made heavy weather of Athinaikos in the First Round too.
I vaguely remember it. The '90 FA Cup Final was when I started to get into football. I remember more of the CWC run when we won it, especially the Montpellier games and final.
The season we lost to Atletico we also played Red Star in the Super Cup which I think Ferguson said were the toughest opponents he'd ever faced. Maybe that had changed since then?

That Athinaikos game was 0-0 first leg, 0-0 second leg after 90 mins. ET at Old Trafford, we ended the game with Bruce and Pallister up front, chucking long balls at them because we couldn't break them down.
Or maybe it was specifically Dejan Savicevic's performance?
The CWC run was great, simply because back then it was rare to ever see televised United games but I remember coming home from school and watching most of that run on either BBC or ITV.
Back in the days when the commentary in away games sounded like it was broadcast on a walkie talkie made out of a potato.
the 91 season was all about blackmore ... a few long range free kicks to get us to the final then clearing a Koeman free kick off the line... legend
"Back in the days when the commentary in away games sounded like it was broadcast on a walkie talkie made out of a potato."
I remember coming home from school and watching the shoot out against Torpedo Moscow and being very confused by the commentary sounding like they were in space.
We were heavily shafted by Uefa in the first few years back in Europe with the foreigners rule.
All non-English were counted as foreign. We had slight leeway, in that we could choose 5 non-English, but with a maximum of 3 non-British.
Apart from the first season back in 1990/91 there was never a point in which we could field a first choice team until the 1996/97 season.

The grainy footage of the European games of yesteryear add something I think. Made it feel like they really were far away.

I don't want to be that guy but it was a Laudrup shot he cleared off the line! He also, vitally, was there when Montpellier could have won it at the death at OT. If he had a bit more pace he'd have been a pretty good midfielder I reckon.
Was the 3 foreigner rule harsh on British clubs? I mean Wales, Scotland and NI aren't England.
