Team for the derby

Ronaldo starting will be music to Pep's ears. Our only prayer of getting anything is if he's dropped and we play counter attack tactics.

Any other type of game and City win at a canter. They may still beat us though if we do everything right because they are just better than us.

Ronaldo being dropped for the Derby would certainly be a big call from Ralf and almost certainly signal his departure from the club this summer which is why it probably won't happen.

Bruno false 9.

Ideally:

DDG
Dalot
Varane
Lindelof (though I accept Maguire will be there)
Shaw

McT
Fred
Pogba

Sancho
Bruno
Elanga

I don't think we have a problem counter attacking with Ronaldo. It's pressing with him that is the issue.

I’d go with this. If Ronaldo plays we’ll struggle.

Nah he's not quick enough and can't run in behind anymore. He won't cause City any problems.

I’d like this but we know Ronaldo will start

Is there a way to get Pogba attacking left position and Sancho right?

4231 again perhaps?

DDG
Dalot Lindelof Varane Telles
Matic Fred
Sancho Bruno Pogba
Ronaldo (Elanga / switch Bruno to false 9 and put Elanga out wide)

Something like that? Iirc Pogba was doing well left attacking and Rashford hasn’t been in good form to say the least

We need to be realistic. City are much better than us at nearly everything. The only chink in their armour is being susceptible to counter attacks. It's pretty much our only weapon we can use on Sunday.

We need to play cautiously and look to maximise every single counter we get. That's our best hope of getting anything.

We've only lost 1 league game at the bitter bowl since 2015/16 season incredibly. Whatever we've done there has obviously worked for us. I don't see any need to change tactics. City could still beat us on any given day no matter what we do though of course.

Get back Ole just for the City game.

We would need to change tactics by going back to what worked under Ole

All our post SAF managers bar Moyes won away at City. We’ve got this 😎

No one really expects us to get anything from this match so anything will be a bonus really. Don't see a reason to deviate from the usual plan at the Etihad either. Stay compact and try to hit on the counter. I wouldn't see Ronaldo being too much of a disaster in this game either if we sit deep. Just keep him on the half way line and try and get him to hold the ball up at least. If he times his runs well I can also see him getting a few opportunities. What a game to actually take one or two of them!

He's been clocked at over 20mph this season. Fastest recorded time last season in the PL was 22mph. He can still motor and if there is space for him to run into he will. The problem is that most teams don't leave space in behind against us. If City do then Ronaldo will try to exploit it.

I doubt Ralf is stupid enough to try a pressing game v City so that removes one of the Ronaldo 'problems' there. He's probably past it now but I wouldn't write him off either in a one off game after he's had 8 days off. City will be wary of him make no mistake about that.

Let's hope we beat them again anyway. We've won more games there than any visiting team since Pep arrived.

Agreed. Although I really cannot see it happening as that run will probably have to come to an end, we can’t score for toffee at the moment and we just don’t seem to have the ability to pull off that type of game anymore. It was one of Ole’s main successes and I think we’re just too confused now.

Let’s hope that Sancho can pull something off for us and continues his progress.
