The Ballad of the Auk

For far and wide our wing-ed friend
Did forage for our fallen brethren
hostelries the Derwent long he cruised
He sang his siren song so clear
but alas, no cry returned

He sought the inebriated one
Who drank and drank till drinking's done
His taxi home had been and gone
And he stood there,crestfallen

But, digging deep through addled mind
he recalled the day had been quite kind
No, more than that, an epic day
when Rams had blown Blackpool away
a heady fourth, we now stood tall
And he'd celebrated grandly

But time and tide had taken leave
A burger, shot, the odd dry heave
Had spiralled him into confusion
Despite the local beer transfusion

So Hebrides, from Northern lands
Concocted up a mighty plan
And sent the Auk with full supplies
To aid our fallen comrade

And lo, we greet the morning sun
when many of us tied one on
The Auk flew on alone
And, we the happy band of Rams
Shout out "hosanna" 'cross the lands
That plucky little f *cking bird
Had brought our Zigger home.

Morning after view :

Well I thought it was a good game by 2 sides that wanted to play football....as opposed to Hoofball applied by many championship teams. I think that whatever happens in the last 7 games its fair to say that however the results have gone this season we've gnerally played football.....so thanks to Wayne and the team for getting us playing in a style again. Yes, I know it can be irritating at times with the tippy tappy but it normally works quite well.

All in all yesterday I thought a draw was a fair result from an entertaining game.

I still cant get my head around the fact that the Administrators STILL havent named a preferred bidder. The story I'd heard from within the club of bumbling by Quantuma seems quite true. If I remember rightly they were naming the preferred bidder in December - yet here we are 3 months later, and some 10 players lighter and still seemingly no closer.... and the Crown Jewels of our best players slipping through our fingers. The EFL and their cohorts have much to answer to.

1. Goalie. Allsop. Dont think he could've saved their goal. It was simply a good shot and well worked goal. Yet another good performance by him between the sticks.

2. Defence. Byrne, Curtis, Cash & Buchanan. I thought they played well. Curtis still looking a bit tired but a 2 week break now should solve that. He's still my Player of the year followed by Byrne.

3. Midfield. Tommo, Bird & Bielik. Still think Tommo doesn't look the player he was when he first broke into the team. Bird did well, Bielik looked to have recovered his form again.

4. Forwards. Lawrence, Ebiowei & Morrison. I've been critical of Tom of late - but he stepped up and took an unstoppable penno when the pressure was on. That said he along with Ravel didn't get much space from a very compact and hard working Coventry defence. Ebiowei flitted in and out as Wingers do but he was a constant thorn in the Coventry team and he played well. I'm giving him MOM.

5. Subs. Plange, Sibley & Festy. Festy perhaps the pick of the 3 as he tends to do the spectacular but Plange I thought is able to hold the ball and bring others into the game. Sibs not much time to make an impact. He needs to do whatever Max Bird did last summer....go away, work hard and force his way into the team.

I'm wondering about young POTY...there's plenty to choose from eh...not made my mind up yet.....UTR

The problem now is the general downward spiral we’re in. Looks almost certain relegation with the decrease in value that comes with that (plus £5m less TV revenue) and thus holding onto certain prized assets has not worked so we will lose them for nothing thus reducing the value even further. At the same time the debts don’t reduce making any investment more difficult to justify. That means a likely 15 point deduction for not making the required 25% debt minimum repayment to start next year plus the difficulty of finding 2 squads to have a chance of surviving in League 1 with that deduction. Which again makes for a less attractive investment.

On the positive side … we are not down yet!

Hi, Terry,

I agree totally - POTY, still definitely Curt no matter what, with Byrne in at number two. YPOTY I would think has to be Festy with Cashin a close second. If C had come in earlier and done as well throughout I would have given it to him. Not easy, as I have not mentioned Plange or Ebiowei, both excellent in their different ways but still to make a lasting imprint.

AND hi to Fin also. What a rosy picture you paint! All true but I'm still not giving up even though the large lady seems to be warming up in the wings.

After the Blackburn game I conceded defeat in our fight to beat the drop. With Reading managing a win against Blackburn where we failed and today QPR doing us no favours with defeat against Peterborough it plummets us to the bottom of the table. I very much doubt we'll be bottom of the league come the end of of the season but will be off fourth from bottom by a considerable gap - 5 points or above.

Reading sacking their manager in my mind was their saviour moment. Ridicule Paul Ince but they've a reasonably good squad and just needed a kick up the backside.

So WHAT NOW is what I've been thinking since the Blackburn game:

* Preferred Bidder nonsense will be confirmed once our status is rubber-stamped. I expect Ashley to be confirmed and a bid of 30 million give or take to be agreed. I also think this will be concluded fairly quickly.

* Wayne Rooney - will he remain? Does he want to after the struggles he's battled admirably against this season? Jan squad losses, hands tied behind his back, unable to bring new recruits in, possible ref bias, suspension at key times, loss of squad player Jozwiak, confirmation of the loss of a key player for the future Ebosele, it's enough to drain the confidence/mojo out of the best of them.

*Given also today's result and old boy Will Hughes rubber stamping a 4-0 win Vs Lampard's Everton ( they don't say that like they did Lampard's Derby County) how long before they realise he's not cut out for this division or very possible , get relegated? Everton will come calling for Rooney and I forsee he'd want out of the Derbyshire circus to join the Merseyside merry go round.

If and a massive IF Wayne Rooney opted to stay he'd go up even higher in my estimate for his managerial approach to date. However I think once the last ball is kicked, the dust settled and the PB announced and the squad's status secured ( to an extent) he'll reluctantly hand his notice in.

*Where do we go from here - "well Desi all of the above is hypothetical" I'm already hearing some of you tell me. Let's say something like the above transpires, who do we look at who will work well under Ashley?

* Calling of Neil Warnock? Loathe to suggesting it but given the drop down do we start again with someone like him at the helm? I feel a seasoned pro will benefit the club, he's indicated his desire to manage a club like us when younger, will our circumstances prompt a calling of hoof ball? We'll be in a graveyard division and need the type of football that will ensure we battle hard and nick results the ugly way. I felt in recent weeks WR missed this decision ( going three at the back for example ) because he wanted to 'play it his way' as opposed to playing it as an ugly scrap against teams like Blackburn, Cardiff, Luton and Middlesbrough.

There's currently a lot of what if emotions running through my mind from where we were in Jan onwards. What could have been had things worked in our favour but we'll never truly know.

I'm optimistic our future will be resolved and the only thing holding it back now is which division we'll be playing in.

Hi Desicafu. All good points and opinions. I truly hope that WR finds it within himself to stay here. His loyalty is quite unique in British football. I think the fans will stick by the club as they realise that we've gone down fighting and that we don't deserve what punishment has been meted out. The fact is that by causing demotion of the likes of us and Sheff. W they've actually diminished the value of the Championship. Shot themselves in the foot... or cut off their nose to spite their face. Sad people.

Think Wayne looked at Everton and thought he would rather struggle at Derby and enhance his reputation than go to Everton and destroy it. Frank is finding a poisoned challis at Goodison.

I know its all hindsight and whatiffery but Frank and Jody should have stayed here.

@View - he definitely needed a second season, possibly even a third season with us before moving on to a bigger club (mid table) in the PL.

Too big a leap and I think he's going to get burned at Everton for it and I take a small amount of pleasure in that. I know I shouldn't but when you look back at his tenure with us he really did mess us up.

@Spart - I think he went with the noble decision, can't leave the staff and squad in this limbo mid season. Come the end of the season and say the PB scenario is wrapped up, Everton are relegated and they made an approach he'd want to consider it. Even if they survived i can't see FL in the role too long, players just don't look to be buying into his way and he sounds like he's losing patience with them too.
