You also have to think about being in the CL over the course of their contract, not just the year they sign.
If City or Liverpool are in the hunt, then yes... they offer a better chance at continued CL qualification... After that, there's not much in it between Chelsea and UTD... Then further down the pecking order are Arsenal, Spurs etc
If West Ham got 4th place, this season, their pulling power wouldn't be hugely improved. It would be seen as a one off.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool have only offered sustained CL qualification under Klopp tbf. Before him it was very hit and miss.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah we were $hit before he joined. Completely transformed us.
I find it funny how our fans still think we are a club that can just go out and handpick who we want as if every player in the world would want to join.
====================
Which posters actually think this? I don't really see any of this. Most United fans are realistic about where we are in the pecking order right now.

The examples posters are bringing to prove the op wrong are poor:
Varane - had an ambition to play for Utd
Ronaldo - returning to Utd
Pogba - returning to Utd
Sancho - no one else was in for him?
Now an in demand player with no affinity to Utd is a different proposition. But bringing in a top manager should help.

I actually don't think that approach he is referring to has served us that well anyway. Look at the amount of money we have wasted in the last 9 years. Over 1bn spent and how much of that was spent wisely? 10-15%?

Putting aside your bias towards United, if you were a young player and had the choice between Liverpool, City and United (not even going to mention the other big clubs), the only reason you would pick United now are:
- You support United

Literally, there is no other footballing reason why we'd be ahead of other big teams in the pecking order. In fact, name me ONE player in the last 5 years that we have signed who isn't over 30, that picked us over another top team?

Well isn't that the whole point? Different players have different motivations. Trying to make a sweeping statement about every player and why they will/won't want to join United is daft.
As for Pogba, he reckons turned down Real Madrid to join United.
Sancho was rumoured to be a target for Liverpool and Chelsea. There was a lot of speculation of Chelsea in particular and he has stated that players from both teams tried to convince him to join them (as did United players).
None of us know with any certainty who was interested in signing any of those players.
No way Liverpool were willing to pay what United paid for Sancho. Liverpool might have been interested but not at that price.
Of course Sancho was linked with Liverpool and Chelsea, all the top players and prospects do. Doesn't mean anything. Liverpool have an interest in hundreds of players but they don't move on too many. Some factors have to align for Liverpool to move.
As for players trying to get him to join, I think that's just regular conversation, not part of some grand plan by Liverpool or Chelsea to use players to get him to sign for them.

None of us can do it with any certainty. As we simply don't know what is truth or what is rumour. But based on rumour/what the players have said:
Fred - Man City
Sancho - Chelsea and/or Liverpool
Lukaku - Chelsea
Maguire - City
Varane - Chelsea

And that is the point isn't it? There are different factors for different players. Its such a stupid conversation really. Especially as I can't remember any of our fans/posters displaying the opinion that we can just sign whoever we want. Most of the conversations seem to be about who would make us stronger and realistic about where we are in the pecking order.

But you are talking one polar of the conversation and applying it to every single player. Its daft. There are a multitude of factors for a player to consider. And they can only be applied once the potential buying clubs have had an offer accepted. Take Kane for example. He might want to move and stay in England. City would have been his first choice and he would have gone there last season, but it didn't happen. Now they have moved on and will sign Haaland instead. Liverpool are his 2nd choice, but Klopp feels he has the right players for his system and the club won't sanction a deal for the money it would take. Chelsea are his third choice, but they have sell Lukaku before they can sign Kane and no-one wants to pay Lukaku's wage, so they can't sell. United are his fourth choice and can pay the transfer fee and big wages. All hypothetical of course, but there are many factors to consider. And timing is a hell of a big one.

In the PL we used to be in pole position for top signings. City and Pool are now ahead of us; there are competitive, have a good team ethic, top managers, and play nice football.
We on the other hand have players that don't even want to be here.
That doesn't mean we can't pull off such a signing, just that it's less likely.

The OP used Bellingham as an example, but he did say any other half decent youngster. I mean, we signed Sancho last summer.
To be honest, it's quite simple. Think of the top 10 best young players in the world right, how many do you realistically think we have a chance of getting if they decided to move? Don't pretend we might not be interested in them as well because why wouldn't any club that has the financial means not be interested in Haalaand, Mbappe, Camavinga etc.
Haaland is exactly what we need given we have no striker under the age of 33 yet we are barely in the conversation because every man and his dog knows we don't stand a chance over City/Real.
For those that still don't get the point, my main point is we don't stand much of a chance IF a certain player is being fought over by several big clubs who are willing to pay the same wages. A lot of ifs yes, but that's my main point.
The OP used Bellingham as an example, but he did say any other half decent youngster. I mean, we signed Sancho last summer.

Well I did mention Sancho as being an exception at the end of the article since I knew he'd be brought up. But as some posters have mentioned, how many clubs were really willing to be 70m+ plus 300k wages during the peak of the pandemic for him? I don't think we had any genuine competition for his signing.

Thank you...I was going to type this exact comment but it seems some posters genuinely believe we beat other top teams to these signings.
Putting aside your bias towards United, if you were a young player and had the choice between Liverpool, City and United (not even going to mention the other big clubs), the only reason you would pick United now are:
- You support United
- Higher wages
- Better chance of getting into the first team
Literally, there is no other footballing reason why we'd be ahead of other big teams in the pecking order. In fact, name me ONE player in the last 5 years that we have signed who isn't over 30, that picked us over another top team?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
None of us can do it with any certainty. As we simply don't know what is truth or what is rumour. But based on rumour/what the players have said:
Fred - Man City
Sancho - Chelsea and/or Liverpool
Lukaku - Chelsea
Maguire - City
Varane - Chelsea

The examples posters are bringing to prove the op wrong are poor:
Varane - had an ambition to play for Utd
Ronaldo - returning to Utd
Pogba - returning to Utd
Sancho - no one else was in for him?

To be fair those 'only' reasons could be pretty persuasive for a lot of players.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You think, but you don't know. None of us do for sure. But there is a history of England training camps being used in this way. United players tried it with Gerrard for instance.

And we need to stop paying ridiculous wages—it helps us get players, but has messed up the culture.

Now an in demand player with no affinity to Utd is a different proposition. But bringing in a top manager should help.

Again only in a mind like yours and the OP's.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you think it's farfetched that sort after players would prefer a club with its crap together, then good for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Indeed there are different reasons—no one is going to move to England for the weather for instance.
In the PL we used to be in pole position for top signings. City and Pool are now ahead of us; there are competitive, have a good team ethic, top managers, and play nice football.
We on the other hand have players that don't even want to be here.
That doesn't mean we can't pull off such a signing, just that it's less likely.

Yes those things are possible, but the op was about a player like Bellingham who every top club will likely be interested in. So he could probably be in a situation where he can pick between these clubs.

I don't disagree with that. But I also haven't seen any United fans on here saying any different. Yet for some reason we have opposition fans and some of our own fans repeatedly making posts/threads banging on about how we think we are still top of the tree. Its an absolute nonsense. The OP and posters of his ilk are living in an alternative reality.

Well I did mention Sancho as being an exception at the end of the article since I knew he'd be brought up. But as some posters have mentioned, how many clubs were really willing to be 70m+ plus 300k wages during the peak of the pandemic for him? I don't think we had any genuine competition for his signing.
