Compton goes for 4. Sorry TCM.
Bowled by Curran too, what a game he's having
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm genuinely pleased for Curran though, first first class ton will hopefully enable him to score a fair few more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i thought you were Essex
that Surrey scoreboard is just filth
oh right you were banging Compton drum for england right?
He is Essex, he's just pleased for Curran after his injury issues
Yep, Essex fan but since Compton got a hundred vs us in the opening round and then followed it up with a hundred vs Lancs where he was stuck on 99 for ages. Bailey bowled 4 maidens at him before he reached 3 figures, at that point, I was impressed with his resolve and I'm banging that drum.
Re Curran, he's a cracking player and having back problems isn't nice for anyone. Potentially reinventing himself as a batter and has scored his first century.
I don't have any tribal hatred towards any of Surrey's players. Just their coach and resources
Speaking of Essex, huge win over Hampshire with Harmer being a one man wicket taking machine again. His form is probably coming too late for a title challenge although unfortunately for England coming just in time for South Africa.
Getting a closer look at Potts this series makes it disappointing that Sam Cook wasnt give a chance. I thought Potts was mid 80s but he was consistently low 80s with good line and length which is exactly what Cook is and has been doing it for the last 5 years. Potts was excellent though and huge credit to him.
Back to Compton, I can't see him getting a chance, it sounds like Crawley is going to be the one they back so him, Burns, Sibley, Hameed are out of the running. Hopefully he can get another hundred today and just continue scoring big runs and maybe he will get a chance next summer if Crawley has a poor rest of the summer and winter.
Curran gets Compton again
I might have to retract my positive comments for SCurran
Can't get facking DBD out though
Why the hate for Gareth Batty TCM?
I'm not really sure why I dislike Gareth Batty. I've been listening to a lot of the cricket collective on talksport in recent months and actually quite like how he talks about cricket.
Like Brett Lee, probably a very nice man, but he always came across as a bit of a caaaant whenever you saw him play cricket. It's a very irrational hatred.
He also reckons you should just let spinners bowl however and not worry about legal or illegal actions. Which I get coming from a spinner. But it would be cool to see, spinners have bizarre actions as it is so let them loose with illegal ones and see what happens.
Surrey have signed Sibley, looks like Burns and Sibley will be back together again
Good move from Surrey as neither are likely to get back into the test team though. Although I do think Burns has been unfairly labelled as a bit of a blocker. I'm sure for Surrey his strike rate is pretty good and up around the 50 mark.
I think it's because he's got that nuggety, unorthodox style to him. I reckon it makes people think of Chanderpaul. Burns has plenty of scoring shots in his locker, he certainly tends to score quicker than Sibley, but I still wouldn't have him down as the first name in a T20 lineup, y'know
There seems to be a lot of Crawley chat at the moment but unfortunately Stokes has given him his full backing. Hopefully it's not "as long as it takes" as that isn't fair on Crawley. I am starting to feel for him a bit because I'm not sure the pressure of "you are the guy" is helpful. He needs to know his place is under pressure otherwise is he going to learn?
I get the loyalty angle but it needs to go both ways and that doesn't mean Crawley works out once every 10 innings (ie at least a 50) with half of the rest being single figure scores and a few starts as someone that pays off.
2 of Burns/Sibley/Compton/Robson would be my choices, well Compton and 1 of the other 3!
That's the thing, Lees is hardly firing either is he... The whole aggressive approach thing seems to be aimed squarely at giving the middle order bats the excuse to have a slog. It exposes the top order horribly against the new ball. Hard to see how any of the top-3 options are going to succeed long term if they're all expected to go out and score at near a run a ball.
Indeed, Lees supposedly had a good series against NZ averaging 28. Which I guess with all our opening problems is probably a par performance. But considering they were a flat pitches, that's not very good. I know things happened with the new ball comparably to the older ball but that's always been the way in test cricket, especially in England.
When Cook went through bad patches, and there were calls for him to be dropped, being loyal to him was fine as everyone knew that when he came through it, he'd give you mountains of runs again. Crawley could well score a 70 or 80 in thr next innings. That doesn't give me any confidence that he will average more than 30 in the SA series (which should be a minimum really) when the reality is it'll probably be under 20.
Stokes said we won't look at stats but if he's averaging 22 as an opener then he's never going to make an impact on a game.
I did read a good point somewhere, that Stokes/McCullum could hardly come out at this ultra-positive early stage of Bazball and say "Yeah Crawley is under serious pressure and he needs runs or he's dropped."
I did find the McCullum comments worrying though. "Crawley can do things very few others can, so he should keep playing the way he does"... I mean, I can think of literally dozens of opening bats who can nick off for single figures, actually. Myself included.
Chance for Crawley, not an easy one.
I'm all for this attacking cricket but I don't get why numbers 1-6 all have to bat this way.
Pope, Root, Bairstow and Stokes are all capable of batting at SR70+ and would be even moreso likely with an older ball against a tired attack. So why not have 2 traditional openers to make their lives easier?
I much rather we pick a Sibley or a Burns and say your job is to get a 35(90) and set up the middle order, than see Crawley driving to slip because every 15 innings he'll hit a quickfire 50.
I actually thought Crawley played quite a measured knock yesterday and was a bit unfortunate to get out shouldering arms to a nip backer with a changed ball. If he can use that as a platform then maybe he can be a success.
He won't be able to help himself though and will get out more often than not nicking off a drive. He's too Vincey
I read your first para and thought "Oh come on TCM, all those big words about how much a waste of space Crawley is, and then you change your tune after one halfway decent knock!"
...then I read your second paragraph and all was right in the world again

I agree. But I don't think Stokes or Baz do. And with that in mind, I think we kinda all need to reassess who the possible England candidates are on the County circuit. Because I think the likes of Sibley, Compton and Burns have seen their chances get badly diminished

of course. Compton is the guy and Crawley is in his way.
It's so interesting listening to Root talk about low risk high reward batting vs the way Stokes talks and plays about putting pressure back on the bowlers.
Bairstow at Trent Bridge went berserk but he allowed himself to get in first. Since then he has paced his innings perfectly and it's been a sensational turnaround. I really hope Stokes can go back to normal.
Thinking about players who could fit into this new set up:
Pollock
Patel
Duckett
Vince
Lawrence
Buttler
Jacks
Carse
Pollock, Patel and Duckett are top 3 players who are naturally attacking and aggressive in red ball cricket although the likes of Roy and Salt may be see as more international quality.
I've completely forgotten about Livingstone but I'd much rather we looked at him ahead of Moeen. Although I hope we are going to look to try and separate the teams as much as we can but perhaps include the likes of Root, Bairstow and Stokes for tournaments rather than bilateral series.
I wonder how long players will actually be backed for because I don't believe they will back Crawley for as long as it takes. If he's averaging about 20 for the next 2 years with maybe 1 century and a few 50s, you can't persist with him. I'm still not convinced by Lees either but he has looked better this summer than he did in the West Indies but his average is still below 30.
Sounds like both will probably get the rest of the summer now, but yeah even with them backing Crawley there must come a point where they cut their losses.
Only player in the top 7 not to hit a 50 so far this summer (everyone else has at least 2 50+ scores), and by the end of the SA series he'll have played 28(!!!) Tests.
That might be true Welsh, but did you know, he plays some lovely strokes.
Lees and Crawley are both getting a lot of plaudits for the fastest century opening stand by an England pair which seems to have taken a bit of pressure off Crawley.
However Lees is the one coming out of that with more credit than Crawley especially as he got run out rather than bowled. He will probably get a hundred in the SA series but I feel like he needs to bat beyond 15 overs in at least 3 of his 6 knocks with a couple of starts thrown in too. If he gets 4, 16, 114, 4, 13, 9 then it won't be any different to what we've already seen and he will expose Pope more often than not to a ball that is 5/6/7 overs old.
