I don't really have a top 10. Never understood people who know exactly what their top 10 is, as if you can determine the margins that make number 8 better than number 9 for example. If I was to name 10 films off the top of my head that I really like though i would say:

Alien
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Aliens
Total Recall
The Silence of the Lambs
Whiplash
The Godfather
12 Angry Men
LA Confidential
Seven

In no particular order:

1917
Shawshank Redemption
Good Will Hunting
Terminator 2
Green Mile
American Beauty
Django Unchained
Wolf of Wall Street
The Mask
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Probably forgetting several.

there were a few moments of confusion before i got that !!!

i enjoyed consequences of love by the way. no wayyyyy is it comparable to BL in terms of cinematography imo, but an interesting and enjoyable movie. the italian film noir from 1970 (forget the name) seemed good too but i only lasted about 30 minutes.

posted on 5/5/22

even limiting it to post-1970, just 10 is tough, so i'll make 2 lists, one being foreign language ones:

apocalypse now
godfather 1 and 2 (cunningly lumped together to count as one choice)
barry lyndon
magnolia
adaptation
mulholland drive
taxi driver
withnail & i
the french connection
chinatown
walkabout

the conformist
stroszek
aguirre, wrath of god
the bitter tears of petra von kant
the enigma of kaspar hauser
the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie
fox and his friends
suspiria
solaris
uncle boonmee who can recall his past lives
spirited away

even then i cheated with 11 apiece.

posted on 5/5/22

ok, i can do my foreign language one i think....
