Not all players need to go out on loan and play regularly. They might benefit more from being around the club, playing in Europa and working with ten Hag.

Foden is an example of someone that has been managed well without having to go on loan. In fact, even in United’s case our academy players usually have more impact at the club when they don’t go out on loan.

"Can't believe you're comparing Garner to Foden" etc etc

we focus more on mental and technical development

Great to see all that focus beginning to bear fruit this season

Asked about Garner on the Forest board yesterday.
There are some good answers for anybody who wants to click over to their board to read.

Good to see you again MU52. Have you been away for a bit?

Thanks for the tip on the Forest board article. Some good feedback there. Here's the link: https://www.ja606.co.uk/articles/viewArticle/445098

On Garner, I'm torn between the romantic narrative of ETH coming in, seeing something in him and fast-forwarding his emergence as an elite midfielder, and the realist approach that says a loan that gives him regular PL football is just what his career needs at this point.

Hi RR, yes on holiday to Majorca.
Stayed at a place called Illetas, the hotel Bon Sol and had a great time. Hired a car for a couple of days and went to Soller and Puerto Pollensa. Plus 5 daus with the grand daughters in Bordeaux.
Skint now, but worth it.
Like you I don't know what to think about Garner, reminds me of Michael Carrick
----------------------------------------------------------------------

OMG, we were looking at places to go away at half-term the week after next (haven't had a foreign holiday since the pandemic struck) and the hotel you stayed in was on our final shortlist. Eventually opted for Tenerife. Bon Sol looked like a very nice hotel and location though.

It's a super hotel, built on a hillside so on different levels, three pools, three restaurants, lovely staff, good food.
I'll go again.

Surely the likes of Garnacho and Hannibal would benefit from loans more than being on the bench ever week, if any of them are more ready it would be Garner who's had a full Championship season under his belt, and even he could probably develop further in the PL playing every week with Forest.

I think ETH will have them all in the pre-season squad before they go on their loans or back to the reserves etc. Garner staying or going back to Forest (or someone else if they don't get promoted) will probably also rest on new signings.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It isn't always the case though, often players going on loan stagnate, even lose their love for the club.

Phil Foden is an example of a talented player who was kept around the club to understand the style of play, become part of the squad and slowly add minutes. I'm sure Palmer will do the same.

I actually quite like the way City are bringing their youngsters through. Of course it's easier when you've a squad well into it's development.

On the loan vs develop in-house question, I guess there's no universal rule here, e.g. even looking at Arsenal's young generation coming through, Saka stayed at the club whereas Smith-Rowe had a couple of separate loan spells. Depends on the specifics of what the individual player needs and circumstances at the club at the time. I suppose if it's a giant club, there's less scope to let someone learn on the job and they therefore an individual probably needs to be already able to play at an exceptional level when getting their first minutes.

Elanga

None of these have been at an exceptional level

City have only brought through one youngster, to be fair. And he’s arguably the gratest academy product they’ve ever produced, and one of the best of brilliant generation of English footballers. It’s not really an example of City having a good model for bringing through youngsters. We are still much better than them at this. Though it’s actually harder to bring them through at City because the competition is insane, and they are expected to win 95% of their games. We are crap which is why someone like McTominay can start for us in midfield but not Scotland.
