Bairstow has also played 65% of his Tests against Aus, Ind, SA and NZ, he has not been padding out his stats against the likes of Ireland, Bangladesh and a poor WI team, in fact almost half his caps have been against Aus and India
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's because we play those teams a lot and given that the series we have with Aus and India are 5 match series, its not that much of a surprise.
He averages 29 against Aus and 27 against India. He is in the 40s vs SA and NZ which is good but he averages 80 against SL from 6 matches with 3 centuries. So is that not stat padding?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He actually averages 50 against SA and Sri Lanka are no mugs, particularly in home conditions. The point is, people like to look at averages, but they can be misleading, it is more when and how you score runs and the level of opposition.
Roooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot
Great partnership from these two. As long as there's no drama early doors tomorrow, we should make it home.

Yes Bairstow has done well against SA and SL. He averages 49.88 which is in the 40s but if you want to round up then yes it's 50. Impressive but his performances weren't consistent enough against different opponent for years after that sensational 2016 and that's why he was dropped. When he came back in after getting dropped, he didn't do well enough until his recall during the Ashes. Since then he has been in excellent form but that doesn't mean he wasn't bad before.
I can't remember the exact stat but it was something along the lines of he averaged 13 against seamers bowling balls that would hit the stumps from 2017-2021 and kept missing straight balls.
He's obviously tweaked something or whether it's a mentality thing i don't fully know. He said he's done a few things but just has a clarity of thought now to back himself to go out there and attack.
I'm pleased for him because when he's on his game, he's a fantastic batter, his knock in the first innings was sublime because he just played good shots with a nice balance and technique to find gaps rather than just smiting the ball to the rope.
Oh god, Michael Vaughan backing Kumar Sangakarra's idea of Buttler coming in for Crawley if he fails again vs India
Jeeeeeeezus
Lol they gonna open with him?
I'm not sure that's in the mindset of Key, McCullum and Stokes as yet. Although I think all 3 would love the best version of Jos in the test side.
Foakes will surely miss the India game considering he tested positive for covid today. So you'd think Bairstow would move down to 7 and take the gloves with Brook coming in although I'd personally keep him at 5 and have Brook at 6 and move Stokes to 7. If he's going to bat like a mad man then he can go down to 7.
However I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Buttler get the nod despite Billings coming in as the sub. Presumably Billings was the sub as the ODI side just finished the Netherlands series the day before the test started.

It's quite remarkable 2 people who played that much Test cricket seem to think essentially turning the Test side into the ODI side will work.
On flat pitches it will, but as soon as the ball starts swinging, bouncing or spinning we'd get destroyed.
It's all mad, and it seems to be working at the minute which is the maddest thing of all. I don't think it'll last, but for the foreseeable it seems like we should abandon all sense of building a conventional test batting side and just expect strange logic and stranger decisions.

maybe theres just not the trust in the so called 'test' players. which has been somewhat justified with some of the performances put in by guys given the chance at the top of the order, albeit a lot of them dont get much of a run in the side.
Yeah, fair point. Maybe that's why Key appointed McCullum. Figured if we haven't got any orthodox top order test bats, why try to play that way.
At least we won't see many draws I suppose
Morgan to announce international retirement
Ah, that sucks. Rubbish way to go out. From an England perspective though, at least we have a ready made replacement in Buttler and I'm sure Morgan will stay around the setup to advise.
You never know, the added burden of captaincy may mean Buttler is no longer considered for the red ball squad... Wishful thinking no doubt, he'll probably be opening vs South Africa
Morgan should have played for another year and retired after the 2023 world cup in my opinion.
Yeah surprised he's not waiting until after the T20 world cup this year given its less of a burden on his body, but he did always say he'd retire when he can no longer contribute.
England's best ever white ball player for me.
Don't think many expected him to play in the 2023 world cup but I thought the T20 world cup would be his last
England have far too much talent which Morgan is holding back because as a batter he was woefully out of form. Only question is if Buttler can replicate the tactical captaincy which Morgan was brilliant at.

He's got a significant margin for error considering how insane our batting lineup is, but I'm sure he'll be keeping Morgan close at hand for tips
