Bielsa speaks

sounds like the problem most of these "intensity" managers have these days.

works well up to a point, the whole we run more tends to only work with the same group of players for so long before they burnout (especially with such a small squad) asking the same group of players to continually keep it up doesnt seem to be possible (sure certain players can rise and relish it) but most burn out and fail to have that same dedication they did at the beginning.

So if you are not at one of the teams that afford to continually freshen things up its extremely tough to maintain it year after year

I love Bielsa BUT, there's more to life than running.

each to their own ... it can be effective just like most tactics if performed correctly and the whole squad buys into it.

but yeah the great Maldini said that if you find yourself always sprinting it means you were not in correct position to start with

It is an interesting juxtaposition with Pep and his disciples that want to move the ball and have the opposition run more.

I’ve studied the statement and i must have missed the part where he apologised for his part in the near disaster.A bit like the press conferences he presided over riddles.Anyway onwards and upwards.

Somebody needs to tell Bielsa the only statistic that matters is Goals

Impressive that we did virtually all of the 20/21 season with 16 players but that’s surely a main factor in our injury list the following season. Everyone warned us about Bielsa burnout and sure enough it happened.

imo Bielsa's only flaw was his insistence on a small squad.

The squad did well to hold it together for 3 years for the burnout.

Almost miraculous, but it caught up with them big time in the fourth season.

In the most respectful way. one begins to think of someone who was training race horses to win a flat or endurance race in the quickest time.

If Bielsa can learn to surprise teams with variations in his tactics and setup available to him of and when necessary (even when dictated by injuries), he could truly take the next step in the evolution of his coaching methods and indeed achievements.

Bielsa's statement is a little confusing. He selects statistics for running and intensity, yet we saw so much more than that. In some ways, he is doing himself a disservice here. In our first season back, in particular, we varied our game plan according to who we were playing. We had three games in a row against top opposition, Man U, Chelsea and City, just before Christmas 2020, I think it was, and we played a resolute defensive formation based on being compact and pushing the teams out wide. We also demolished Villa, Leicester and Spurs where we were not in possession for most of the games (and we had a lot of games where we dominated possession, but didn't score), but created explosive moments when we did have the ball.
The Spurs game is one of my favorite all time Bielsa gifts to Leeds supporters. We were wonderful!
Hee's a reminder of what we looked like when Bam Bam was scoring for fun.

Biggest thing I took from that youtube link was
what a huge mistake it was not resigning Alioski.

I agree, Batty, I still can't believe we let him go. He played 36 games in that season, suffered no major injuries, and was full of energy. A lot of people only saw the limitations in his game, but when he and Harrison were on song, they were a force to be reckoned with. We could have kept him for a million. Instead we threw away a fortune on Firpo. There must be something I'm missing here, because that looks like one of the biggest mistakes we made last season.
