He’s a bit of a tap on merchant (certainly wasn’t first to report the Malacia deal yesterday) but you can usually trust what he says

Because he's the hero Twitter deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.

He called his story yesterday an exclusive. In fairness he only does that when he is first with it. He is a tap in merchant at times but no other journalist comes close in terms of covering Europe.

Simon Stone and Howard Nurse are the definition of tap in merchants in journalism.

The whole tap in stuff is over-exaggerated. Him and Ornstein get the most exclusives out of there of any football journalists, and they usually give credit to others when they get news first too.

I still find it a bit mad that someone could make a whole freelance career out of reporting football transfer rumours on twitter but I bet he does really well for himself.

An hour or so ago from the man himself;

Manchester United and Barcelona have both clear that the final value of Frenkie de Jong deal will be €85m package. Discussions ongoing on the €20m add-ons structure, so it takes time - guaranteed fee is €65m. 🇳🇱 #MUFC

Personal terms to be discussed with Frenkie right after.

Personal terms will be “please come Frenkie we’ve spent 2 months sorting this deal out ffs”.

I guess even if he started off as a fraud, with the following he's now got it follows that if a club or an agent want to leak some info, he's the man to go to

The guy just reports other people's stuff.

Yeah I’m not keen on him.

Ornstein is brilliant though.

posted on 29/6/22

He certainly seems to be one of the most reliable journalists out there, would also put Ornstein up there.

His big 'exclusuve' yesterday even had 'according to Dutch sources' in the original tweet. So he's only passing on the information really. They aren't really his exclusives

He just does what everyone else is too lazy or busy to do. He must spend hours upon hours reading tweets and media stories around Europe. Appreciate the graft he puts in.

posted on 29/6/22

yeah he tweets alot of rumours aswell, most clubs will likely have a journo whos more reliable (who he ends up using as the source anyway)

They guy has made a career out of spinning other people's stories as some kind of first hand information.

Not going to lie, I do envy him.

Any1 that think clubs like utd are letting people like Romano know the ins and out of their transfer negotiations is deluded. What very often happens is these clubs/agents leak stories to their media spin doctors and people like Romano pick up on these stories.

Well yeah, but this is a pretty basic part of journalism in general. He definitely has contacts who will give him bits of reliable information to keep him on side for when he serves a purpose for them.

As I said, even if he started off as something of a 'tap in merchant' so to speak (and I'm not saying he did or didn't), his influence and reputation on social media makes him a useful person for clubs and agents to know.

The thing is, like a gambler who only ever tells you about his winnings, the things he gets wrong you never hear about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd disagree with that. He never reports anything which doesn't have some legs in it and he would never say "X player is going to Y" unless it'as actually happening (hence, tap in merchant)

What he would say is "X club is in talks with Y" - which is true, which is why so many people follow him. He's in the know and reliable.

It's more like a gambler saying: "There's a horse race today, and X is the favourite to win"

Quite, and as bloodred says fair play for making a career out of it. Spotted that nobody is going to follow thousands of journos and agents but he could be an aggregator much like Rightmove has done for house sales and rentals for estate agents.

He has a network of football agents which keep him informed on transfers. The majority are those in Italy, Spain, Portugal and France.

Very good journalist but only reports on Liverpool and Everton. There’s some very good journalists but most only report accurately on one club or region.

Romano covers world football essentially.
