its misleading it was never bigger than the mens game at any stage... It was big during the war because there was no mens game. as soon as the war ended mens game was back to being the most popular again.

“Towards the end of 1921, the FA made the shock move of effectively banning mainstream women’s football. In a meeting, their members cited “complaints having been made as to football being played by women”, and claimed that “the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged”. The women’s teams were no longer permitted to play on official FA grounds, bringing this golden era of women’s football to a crushing end.“

This is a bit disgusting tbh. But I’m sure you raging misogynists would enjoy it though.

The article seems poorly written and researched, as with most things these days you have to look at a few sources to find where the truth is not the propaganda.

Basically it was due to their being no men's football due to the war that the women's rose in popularity, the first article didn't mention that

Worth reminding people that post war, the womens game was more popular than the mens game, so the government banned womens football.

So if I were a woman, I’d feel pretty bitter about the gap in wages and I’d be looking for some manual overriding to level things up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Very doubt if that is true Winston. I know Spurs were getting 70,000 crowds in the old 2nd division post war, don`t know of any women`s team ever get anywhere near those sort of crowds. Unless you can tell me otherwise.

This is also in the historical context of the political drive for women’s suffrage. English football’s governing bodies would remain famously conservative and racist for many decades thereafter. No challenge could be accepted to superiority of the white Anglo male. It’s the same mindset that led to the refusal to enter the early World Cups and the inaugural European Cup, as well as the effort to keep Apartheid South Africa in the football fold and other blemishes on England’s football authorities.

The semantics of the numbers are largely irrelevant.

The key detail is that women were attracting tens of thousands of people to watch and then the authorities banned it.

Who knows where the womens game would be now if that didn’t happen?

100 per cent correct. It is just an article written about football during and around the 1st world war, where the women pulled in a crowd at ONE game. That did not in any way make it bigger than the men`s game at the time. I think there was a crowd of somewhere aroundabout 113,000 for a men`s match aroundabout the same era. The crowd for the women`s match was mentioned as 50,000 plus thousand. How does that make the women`s game bigger?

A one off crowd with tickets being given away for nothing means nothing. Do Barcelona women get those crowds every week? The answer is no. I doubt they get more than a couple of thousand.

Nice try Sandy. Your true colours are there for all to see so don't try to pretend otherwise. If you simply don't like it, then why bother commenting on it? Why use words such as "loath"? Why are you sick of the coverage and having it "rammed down your throat" if you simply don't like it? Just ignore it if it bothers you so much.

The only touchy generation is yours. We're all very comfortable with an inclusive society and if Women's football is getting some of the limelight, good for them, It's not like it's distracting you from men's football is it?
