Oh, and I was watching the CW Games last night and Claire Balding was saying the atmosphere seems much friendlier and less toxic than the men's game and right there, for me, is what's misunderstood about what it is to really support a team. The reason it's more like an Olympic crowd is because most of them don't really give a damn. They're fairweather fans. Give me a volatile mob who really, really care about the outcome every day of the week.

Rant over.

Fair point but there has to be a happy medium between the atmosphere of the men and women's Euro finals from the last two years surely?

But to add to that, it's almost impossible to say all of this without appearing misogynistic. It's nothing of the sort. It's just simply not right to measure trophy success between men and women, nor top scorers between White and Rooney.

My biggest fear is that this will shunt men's football to the side in terms of coverage. Such is the hysteria surrounding this, how far away are we to a mixed MOTD? Having to sit through 10 of their games on a Saturday evening, meaning each game will have to be shorter to fit in the scheduling. Less time and less analysis per match. It's be like watching MOTD on an FA Cup third round weekend.

Then there's Sky rising the prices because they've got the WSL. I'm out if they do that. If they start integrating it into Super Sunday or MNF, I quit football. I'm done.

Now you may say these are the ramblings of a grumpy old man, but come on does anyone take women`s football seriously?

=================

Yes, girls who love football and are seeing it as a sport for them rather than a sport for boys. Girls who have role-models they can actually aspire to be rather than male players they can admire only.

I can only assume you don't have (given your purported age) grand-daughters interested in football. My niece is 7 and loves football, plays in her local team. These players are her heroes, there were tears of happiness when from her when they won.

Personally I'm all in favour of women's football. Why the hell shouldn't women be able to play the game we all love. And if the BBC or the general media hype it up a bit, great. Perhaps that'll offset the grumpy old men who seem keen to rain on the parade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don`t have any Grandaughter`s mate. And even if I did, I think they would be doing better things than watching women kicking a ball around.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Better things

Bottom line is sport should be available to all and should be seen as attainable to all. Women's football is growing in popularity all around the world and last night 87k people paid to watch the game with another 17m watching on TV. You're just a bit of a dinosaur.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
what was the total viewing figures for the final?

I know that in 2019 there was over 1 billion that watched the final.

it may dilute the coverage a little but there is so many avenues to watch the mens game that you will never be stuck. The womens game will never hurt the mens game it ill always be vastly superior

Whilst I'm supportive of the women's game, I'll admit I don't understand the insistence of comparing the achievements of the mens and womens teams.

Tennis is one of the most developed sports as a male and female competition. When they talk about Serena Williams grand slams, they compare her to Margaret Court and Steffi Graf. Just as the totals of Nadal, Djokovic and Federer are compared.

Doesn't annoy me in the way it seems to annoy others but I do think it's unnecessary and not a valid comparison.

If you market anything well enough you can make it popular. Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time in 2009. It was pig shiiiiit but they marketed it from here to kingdom come. The women's game has had a massive leg up in recent years, which is a good thing I guess to create equality within the game, but don't tell me that the popularity is organic and not manufactured.

The girls did well but I have limited interest in Women`s sport, other than to take a look at some of the lovelies who play it.

I reckon they deserve their own Sports channel now, maybe `Sky Sports Ladies News`, which will put all the women`s sport in one place, rather than cluttering up one channel.

It is becoming rather confusing having all the ladies sport news mixed in with the men`s. It will streamline things and give people more choice of what they want to watch.

If you want friendliness and respect, go and watch rugby or another diluted sport where the meaning has been lost. We should stop trying to make football more about respect, sportsmanship and being friendly and go the other way.

The football in the PL is some of the best in the world but the stadiums, fans and atmospheres are total shiiite. That is because it has become expensive and gentrified.

If you want real football then you have to go to Scotland or the lower leagues. Maybe one day people will realise what football is all about rather than just being brainwashed by the media into thinking sterile, corporate shiiite on TV is real football.

I do wish the media would stop saying "England won the final at a sold out Wembley". There would be something very wrong if it wasn't sold out. 'Won the final at Wembley" is fine.

The same media are saying that 17m watched the match. How long do you have to look for to register on those figures I turned it on a few times to check the score but never watched for more than a few minutes and I'm sure many folk did the same. Do I count?

UK audience apparently. It's nothing compared to the mens final (the UK audience was about 35m I read) but comparing it to the mens game is pointless - the mens game will always be more popular.

As a stand along audience, 17m is pretty impressive imo.

Was at Elland road yesterday and it was absolute cringe playing its coming home at HT after Eng won. It was just before the 2nd half and we were playing an Italian side who beat England in the Euros everyone cares about. A bit embarrassing celebrating winning a non league standard football tournament.

Well, yes, on the face of it, I'm like you in that I watched that final last year and looked on in despair at the violence that ensued after full time, not to mention the subsequent abuse Rashford, Sancho and Saka got on social media. But it's that same tribalism that creates a truer, rawer atmosphere. If we sanitise and create one like yesterday, we strip out all of that animalistic joy. When the men play and we score, the celebrations in the stand feel like they matter to each and every one, tears flow from all ages but yesterday's match felt like a game for non-football fans. Those that fancied a day out but the result didn't really matter all that much to them.

The anger we saw last year was just a symptom of the seesaw of emotions. The high was so high that the loss became worryingly toxic. If anything what we saw at the end, whilst ugly, proves just how much a men's victory in a major tournament matters.

How much were the tickets to the final? Surely that contributes to the 87k that went through the gates so the figure comparison to the men's game, is warped as the men would charge a hell of a lot more.

Also, contrary to recent reports, the men's England game against Italy WAS sold out, they just had to make sure that there were gaps between supporters to avoid conflict.

Can't believe that people have been reporting that the women attracted a greater attendance than the men. Come on!!!!!

It goes back to the other point you raised as there was apparently no segregation, which is definitely required for the men's.

England's men are at the equilibrium that foreign investment in the PL has brought. They need to win something now before English players become even more of a bit part within the PL.

The top English teams have one or two good English players who currently have the benefit of playing with world class foreign players and being coached by world class foreign managers. Now is the time for them to reap all of these benefits.

Just a few years ago, the top players at the top clubs were English. You had Terry, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney etc. Now you have whatever a Grealish is for £100m and an inanimate object in Maguire playing for Man Utd for £85m or whatever. All of the top players are foreign and English players just get squeezed in due to quotas.

Within a few years, English players will be playing an even lesser role at big clubs and even worse English players will be hyped up and bought for £150m due to quotas of English players needed (not due to their ability).

What is a Nathan Ake and why is it at Man City?

Whilst there is still a balance, and the PL is still vaguely sort of English, England need to win something.

There may come a point where money talks and there doesn't need to be English players in the PL anymore. Why would Saudis need Ben Mee in their team when they could have a world class foreign player?

Anyway, it does look like now or never for England.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true as they've been banging that drum for decades now and we've got a young squad of truly talented players now in the England set up. If players are good enough, they'll come through, like Foden at City, for example.

Anyway, not sure what all this has to do with the women's game.

Only the final warranted being shown live on main stream TV

probably BBC 2 woulda been more appropriate than BBC 1

Totally agree. Yesterday the BBC filled up their TV schedule from 16.30 until 23.30, other than a 30 minute news break, with Womens Football and the Commonweath Games, another load of rubbish, which I doubt most people have zero interest.

I like the Beeb a lot for their Documentaries and news coverage, but they let themselves down with their inane coverage of sporting events, that most have zero interest in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sandy, I know you only post these articles because your a desperate attention seeking individual. Just because you don't like something, it doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. The viewing figures for both events you mention will tell their own story. And from someone who lives in Brum, I can tell you the Commonwealth Games is massively popular. Well over a million tickets sold making it the most attended games ever. Stop being a grump and take off those old man blinkers.

No, my issue is and always will be with the media.

Can we please, please stop this narrative that it clears the "xx years of hurt"? It feckin doesn't. The hurt is owned by the men's team. It's owned by the millions up and down the country, like myself, who have for decades had their hearts ripped out every 4 years or so. I've been watching since 1986 so that's over 35 years... AND COUNTING!!!! I watched the game yesterday and whilst I was happy for them, I didn't really care all that much so has it cleared all that hurt? Of course it hasn't. That hurt is based on the trials and tribulations of the men's game. The women lost the same game against the same opponents in 2009 so for them it's 13 years of hurt. They're separate sports to me so the achievements should be measured separately.
--------------------------------

Yep, totally agree. Its is a completely different sports.

I don't even know any women that are interested in women's football. They'd rather watch men's because the quality is much higher. I've never really had any issues with women's football, its great that there is a league for them, but the overhyping from the media like its elite level sport on par with the men's game is just pure cringe.

The fact is, now matter how much is invested and promoted, it will never be the same quality as the men's football because biologically, men will always be bigger, faster and stronger.
