Lewandowski would have been a great signing.
It all depends on the player. James Milner is 36 but is a reliable player for Liverpool who rarely lets them down.
Not that we ever had a chance but a player like Lewa would have been a superb signing. A successful side is usually made up of a mix of ages. You run into trouble when it’s too young or too old. But the odd older player who can step in and hit the ground running and be a great example to the younger players is often a good thing.
But the bigger issue is the lack of development of the younger players, and these players are being brought in with them in mind.

Milner has also been at Liverpool since he was 29-30. He also plays a bit part role in a far better side than we have currently. You put Milner into our side and he’ll look dreadful.
Bit of an odd comparison.

Would he? I’m sure he’d do a good job. I don’t really think how long a player has been at a club is an issue when your OP is about ageing players.
Just because a player is over 30 doesn’t mean he’s for the scrap heap. Not everyone over 30 is as bad for club chemistry as Ronaldo. Benzema is 34 and almost single handedly won Real a CL last season. I’m sure the players at the club appreciate his efforts and attitude.
Again, it’s really down to the players themselves. Some are egotistical ones wanting a final payday. Others arrive and want to help the side succeed.
I'd prefer us to sign this Sesko guy and let Erik develop him into a top striker.
At this stage I find it weird that people are still talking about the player profiles being the problem, rather than how the squads have been assembled, the coaching and the lack of pressure from the top down to be the best.
We can pretty much write off any profile of player as one to avoid based on our history in the market. Which would obviously be reeetarded.

It’s a huge risk though. He’s scored 6 top flight goals in his entire career and is one for the future. I know we’re doing a long term rebuild but we still need to remain competitive. If we get this Sesko guy his best chance is to be loaned out straight away.

Milner would not be an upgrade on Fred or McTominay. My article was about signing this type of player and there’s no way Klopp would have signed him if he wasn’t already at the club imo.
Benzema is one of the few exceptions to the rule. I’m not saying every player is past it in their 30’s but most are on the way down at 33-34 or sooner in many cases.
final but we finished 6th in the league with him as the main man.
And he went on to win a league title after leaving us and still performing.
Maybe just maybe it is the culture of this club.
Worst PL season also coincided with Greenwood being a plonker. Martial running away to Spain. Cavani taking us for a ride and stealing a living. Rashford could not pass a football. My word I thank my lucky stars we had Ronaldo

If age is the issue it’s the lack of players between 25-30. We’ve not had enough top players in their prime playing together. Having older or younger players wouldn’t be as big an issue had we got that right.
Exactly, the squad lacks any sort of balance in terms of age/develpment.
We either seem desperate to bring in young talent that we're sh-t at developing or players in their twilight years who aren't that bothered.

Exactly my point. We’ve had such a scattergun approach over the past 10 years that one could make an argument against any type of signing and make it a compelling one but it never tells the full story.
I wouldn’t say it was always scattergun, but it’s certainly not been coherent and competent squad building. Ultimately a club isn’t going to compete for the biggest prizes without a spine of top players in their prime.
Weirdly, people seem to be against signing such players because they have failed in the past. But would like to keep signing young players which have been just as big failures.
Building on what Dazza says, we're in a position where we contemplate relying on Sesko or Ronaldo, or potentially both in the coming year. In an ideal scenario you'd have a striker in their prime + promising youngster who can learn from them and is hungry to take his chances when given a few minutes. Or perhaps the player in his prime + veteran who can come in and channel his experience into valuable cameos. You don't really want to place primary responsibility on the youngster or the veteran.
