Might be important to an obsessive or wum but the club will mostly care about who paid for a seat.

Hey Sandy, I just realised I posted on your thread and you must have unfiltered me? Never even looked to see who'd posted OP. Cheers. I promise not to mention M*****ez.

It's embarrassing isn't it, they are just taking people for fools.

I reckon 45k might be a bit generous Sandy you could see the pattern of the seats when the tv camera panned around the top tier.

As I've always said regarding them and Arsenal they can get away with it because the Prem powers that be want the product to look as popular as possible.

That said having watched the game it's easy to see why nobody turned up both teams were dreadful.

I thought there was maybe a train strike - there was up here.

There was a capacity attendance at the Emirates, so no excuses with a train strike. Mind you Arsenal exaggerate their attendances as well.

If you look on the official attendance figures for the season. Only six supporters have failed to attend a West Ham home match this season.

Billy, they will post at the end if the season, they have the highest attendances in London, when they clearly don't. Although they do get bigger gates than Chelsea.

It's not just league games either.

My bro in law is a West Ham regular and he told me that they gave the Viborg gate as around 30k, he knows the stadium well and was there and reckons they were lucky if it was 5 figures.

At the very least when average attendances are given the clubs should be forced to state how they counted them.

Was like a preseason friendly watching it on sky. Would have said 40k, not 60 odd

Watching the game I found myself wondering why Neves keeps getting linked with a big move for alot of dosh.

He scores the odd screamer here and there but in reality he rarely delivers.

They were playing Wolves to be fair. Would you wanna sit through that?

I watched a bit of the West Ham v Wolves game yesterday, and noticed thousands of empty seats...

----------

Yeah it's terrible, it's almost as if thousands of people purchased tickets and then couldn't attend due to the biggest rail strike in decades.

That may be a valid excuse for yesterday but it's missing the point of the article.

Let's be generous and say there were 45k in the OS yesterday then if West Ham gave that as the gate most folk would say not a bad crowd for a game between two poor teams during a rail strike but instead they gave the crowd as over 62k and turn themselves into a laughing stock.

They should stop trying to appear to be more popular than they are and remember that 45k is 5k+ more than Chelsea get.

Pawl

Get your point however it's possible WHU don't know the actual attendance, they sell the tickets but have nothing to do with the stewarding or stadium operation.

Oh come on JGA, I'm sure modern technology can tell us how many go through the turnstiles.

Spurs have sold out every Prem game at home so far this season but the gate is never quite 62.8k because by the law of averages there will always be a few who can't make it due to unforeseen circumstances.

As others have said attendance means how many are in the stadium not tickets sold.

At our ground some tiers of hospitality don’t go through turnstiles. Players lounge, some guests the same. Flip side some still sneak their kids or mates through despite the stewards.

OK, do you think that's what has happened at West Ham?

Bearing in mind their gate seems to be about 17k on the high side.

Arsenal v Spurs had a capacity crowd, so no excuse West Ham stadium couldn't be full. They just ain't a big enough attraction, even though they practically give tickets away.

Not really a fair comparison, getting lifts, Ubers or whatever for a massive local derby or doing it for a game against Wolves.

posted on 2/10/22

With everything said it is clear we had a fair number of empty seats yesterday, you could see it from the inside.

What I'd be genuinely interested in knowing is if many clubs simply report number of tickets sold (possibly prior to the game) and the press put that down as "attendance" for brevity and convenience.

All grounds in the PL now use scanning methods on digital tickets, very few now actually use paper tickets and if they do these will need to be scanned to avoid/find counterfeit tickets.
