Casemiro’s possession retention

His passing is odd but he does seem technically better than Mctominay. He also doesn't seem stronger than the average defensive midfielder in the league.

Casemiro’s game by numbers vs. Everton:

81% pass accuracy
9 ball recoveries
5 ground duels won
4 tackles won (🥇)
3 long balls completed
2 key passes
1 assist
-------------------------------

Should have had a goal to add to that.

Casemiro's never been the tidiest player on the ball ever, but he is better than some of what he showed yesterday. He's still adjusting to being in a new league, with new teammates in a new country. I don't think his english is very good yet either.

What I do like about him is that he commands a real presence in the middle of the pitch. He also doesn't flap when he makes a mistake; he seems to accept the error and then get his head back in the game right away (as seen with the moment that led to the assist). That kind of calming & experienced influence will be an asset.

Regarding his forward passing, I believe that he was 5th in La Liga last season for forward passes. So expect to see more of that. I think that he still needs to get used to the pace of the PL - one he does then hopefully he won't lose the ball as frequently.

Also his first start in the PL at a tricky away ground. He's only likely to improve and get sharper with game time. EtH has done well to slowly ease him in.

I also remember reading before we got him that Casemiro has always had slow starts to a season and imrpoves as the season progresses.

BT gave him MOTM and even Danny Murphy was singing his praises on MOTD2, he does seem very calm and assured on the pitch, mind you I thought Luke Shaw was the pick of the bunch yesterday

That was his best game for us since before the euros

TBH he has looked terrible so. Looks so out of shape it's unreal. Thank goodness for the EL, cos this dude needs game time badly!

PS the MOTM thing was an absolute joke 🤣... Another reason not to pay attention to daft pundits.

Agreed, he looks far leaner also. Hopefully Malacia taking place has given him a boot up the backside that signing Telles initially seemed to do.

Bit concerned that he lost the ball 17 times. Didnt seem that watching it on the telly so you dont get to see it all. The pundits on BT and MOTD thought he was brilliant and the MOTM.... but if he lost the ball 17 times he couldnt have been, afterall he was bought to be that safe Alamo in front of our defense, to be able to be calm and hold the ball under pressure. The PL is a step-up in intensity from LL especially in that position and it could take a while for him to adjust to that. Also at Madrid he had players like Modric around him to play the ball to, which clearly he doesnt have at United, (like Pogba did at Juve) so he has to be able to do more in a shorter space of time. He will get better week on week.

This seems to be the main thing, as when he was dispossessed for their goal. Definitely needs games.

He could have had a couple of goals yesterday as well. Should have buried that header and he also had an opportunity in the scramble that led to Bruno's disallowed goal.

Only saw the first half but whenever he lost the ball which was quite a bit he just seemed a bit off the pace which I think/hope will simply improve with more minutes on the pitch. He might not be quite up to Modric's level but Eriksen is a very techncally acomplished player next to Casemiro who he can move the ball on to.

FFS... He has not looked "terrible". You've either no idea what you're watching, or you indulging some ridiculous hyperbole. He's been alright; clear signs of his class and some loose moments, too.

As for "out of shape" - he's a unit and he's shredded. A few months ago he played a starring role in a CL final win. One what grounds are you claiming he's out of shape?

I have no concerns or issues with him so far at all tbh. He’s just bloody joined us and yesterday showed us exactly how good he is.

Don’t get why people can’t just be happy….perfection doesn’t exist.

Facking hell. If Casemiro is out of shape, the rest of us have no chance.

He lost the ball quite a bit but also did a lot of good things. He’s hardly played all season and it’s a new league. He will be class when he gets going.

Off the top of my head I can think of 4 or 5 very adventurous passes giving the ball away. It probably isn’t as bad as the status suggest.

As 1982 said, I think ETH has managed him really well. You could see from his early cameos that he was not quite ready to be thrown in at the deep end, so easing him in made a lot of sense.

Bit by bit, he is showing more signs of hitting his levels. Now he is likely to start again on Thursday and Sunday, so a real chance to cement his place.

“ but if he lost the ball 17 times he couldnt have been, afterall he was bought to be that safe Alamo in front of our defense,”

Does ETH really play with that type of player though? Maybe he’s asking for progressive passes from Casemiro?

posted on 10/10/22

It really depends on how he gives it away. If it's given away in his own half that's obviously a huge problem.
But he had a couple of shots off target. Does that count as losing possession?

posted on 10/10/22

I think he's still struggling with a lack of sharpness but even last night you could see he was getting sharper as the game went on. He needs a run now to get up to speed and familiarise himself with this team and English football and his retention should improve as a result.

He was never going to be the player you want dropping deeper during build-up and when under pressure though. We needed another midfielder for that which would've helped us a lot this season.

I'm sure we'll probably take another stab at De Jong at some point but we can't afford to wait around forever for this type of player.

One assist and nine dispossessions suggest he bought exactly the right player.

I thought it was an encouraging start tbh.

Clearly the guy has talent and it will take him time to get used to the pace of the league.
