I think the few thousand people that will go to Qatar have a valid complaint here.

The other millions who will watch on TV need to shut their traps as this does not affect them in any way. Stop preaching all over the place.

Everyone bans what they want and the word cup should comply with the laws of it's host. What next? Arab countries refusing to play in a world cup held in a place where women are banned from wearing a headdress? Where's the line? How far can we go with this?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But its the hypocrisy and elitism of it. The corporates who have paid 10s of thousands can drink in the stadium.

Qatar know well that money gets you whatever you want, including a WC, and therefore if you pay enough, of course you can drink in the ground. The actual fans who make a WC what it is, well feck'em, they're not elite enough be granted such freedom.

Its either banned or it aint. Its either a "non alcoholic country" or it isnt.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Have the Qataris declared themselves a non alcoholic country? Alcohol is legal in Qatar, there's just more rules around it and that's been the case for a long time. So I don't get this "Its either banned or it aint" angle. Doesn't make sense.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is in part the ridiculous short notice of it all. Also the inconsistent application within the football stadiums.

Plans (bus, taxi travel, hire car, restaurant and bar bookings) will likely have already been made on the basis of an understanding of alcohol being served in the stadium. This ridiculous change at the 11th hour has an impact on those plans, that must surely be recognised by us all.

I’ve tried non alcoholic beer just to see what it was like, tasted nothing like beer, it’s like sugary dish water, vile.

It’s weird to drink it tbh, or spend money on it when there are so many really nice soft drinks out there.

No beer at an event would be a deal breaker for me, just wouldn’t bother. Went to a wedding where booze was banned, awful do.

Next thing I knew I woke up with no trousers or pants on, with a traffic cone in my jacksy and pink leather lederhosen, in the middle of Amsterdam, surrounded by empty becks blue bottles and shaved bodyhair (mine).

Stuffs facking mint.

Interesting.

It’s their country, their World Cup, their culture and their rules. If the World Cup was being held in England, would supporters of Middle East countries be outraged by women not wearing Hijab? Of course not.
Having said that, whoever came up with the idea of alcohol-free Guinness should be tried for heresy.

I can up with watching football without a beer as long as I don't have to spend 90 minutes listening to vuvuzelas.

Who defines “culture” Ot should be the people…not the politicians.

Therein lies the problem. All people have different values and perspective and they should be respected not forced upon others like a moral superiority.

This 11th-hour stunt gives a new meaning to moving the goalposts at the last minute.

I ageee with those who day this is going to end up in the courts. The law firm which ultimately steps forward to take this in is going to make a lot of money.

What a silly argument this is. There are literally thousands of Muslims in uk and if you bother to hit any major uk city you’ll see some wear it some don’t - personal choice. So no idea what the relevance of this is…

Qatar have played a blinder if the objective was to pisss of the narrative. Hired a bunch of Indians to pretend to be England (plus others) fans and then in the 11th hour ban alcohol

What about if our country banned women from wearing the Hijab two days before the tournament started? Think they might be outraged then?

Especially at football games. So respect is needed from their side of the argument.

The most shocking aspect of the things he says is that he's defending the indefensible.

We should just skip Qatar and look forward to the next two World Cups in N.Korea and Iran...

No. It's just a few weeks long tournament. Don't go if you have a problem with the rules.

I've said on other posts I ain't interested in this world cup, I'll go to the sports bar as I usually do at weekends, but I won't be going out of my way to make extra plans for the football!..

If my mates are there watching any game then I'll watch, but I don't give a flying feck who's playing and even less of a feck over who wins!..

Qatar have been awarded the world cup, as far as I'm concerned they can give them the cup now and close shop!..

Freedom of choice is one of the founding principles of English law, A14, going back to the Magna Carta - no person has more rights than any other. So that permeates every aspect of life in the UK. There is a tolerance for many diverse or often opposing viewpoints and practices, whether it is the practice of one’s faith, the expression of sexual preferences, or even the right to drink beer.
The rules are different in the Middle East. Undeniably different, in so many respects. When we travel there, my wife covers up in public places. We drink alcohol in hotels but nowhere else. So why should Qatar change these rules and practices for the World Cup? The outrage on this thread suggests that many of us struggle to accept this.

When England hosted and won the World Cup in 1966, homosexuality was illegal, as was cannabis (a drug like ALCOHOL), the death penalty was STILL ACTIVE. The Abortion Act was passed in 1967. So the November 11ty Remembrance Day we commemorate - are we agreeing or disagreeing with our hero’s and forefathers??

Also Qatar has over £40bn of interests in British companies. Where’s the rage over that? Where’s the outrage for the billions we give saudis?? Where’s the outrage for the weapons we supply to Syria, Israel, Saudi and many other countries which cause ridiculous amount of damage….. where are the human rights then?? The hypocrisy in all of this is what’s gets me.
