Simple - mentality. We’re very similar to the Dutch in that respect, we bottle the big games because we haven’t got the mental strength to see it through.
Granted it’s got better (Iceland was a real low point) but it’s not going to improve until we stop talking about 1966, Geoff Hurst finally pops his clogs, there is a change in the belief we have a divine right to win it and we stop thinking we’re better than we are and realise our limitations.
"Perhaps I'm being generous even including us as a big team. Because the expectancy of us to beat the likes of Senegal, Iran etc. should be the same for the big teams when they face us given how poor our record is against them. We're not much different from the Switzerlands, Swedens and Polands of international football in that respect"
Can honestly say that's the best comment I've ever heard from an England fan
It's coming home gets rammed down our throats at these major tournament all the time...yet as you say, your record at these tournaments just simply does not merit that level of expectation
You are taking about the knockout stages....I'd extend that to the group stages aswell.
Without home advantage, the "biggest" team you have beaten at any of these tournaments for the last 20 years or so is Argentina in the groups in 2002.....who didn't even make it out of that group

Netherlands may have somewhat similar mentality to us but even they have a better record and I probably would expect them to beat us in a KO game of a tournament.
It should be more excusable for them than it is us anyway, they have a significantly smaller population. With our leagues, our passion for the sport, and our population we are the biggest underachievers in world football.
Where’s Ireland?
We beat Italy at wc 94
2018 was seen as a good campaign for England, and again, was one without home advantage
When you break it down, when did you face a big team at that World Cup?
Croatia put you out
Do Colombia qualify as a big team?
Biggest team you faced at that world cup was Belgium....twice (in the groups and 3rd place playoff)....and you lost both games

That's a fair point about the group stages. 2 years earlier we also beat Germany and they didn't manage to get out of the group either. It's bound to be a bigger list of countries in the OP if I included group stages from when we last did in 2002, cause just off the top of my head I can think of Japan, Sweden and Switzerland.

Colombia not really a big team no. Don't think they even do well in Copa Americas. Sweden are the biggest team we beat at that tournament but I don't count them as one of the traditional big teams, which is why we've beaten them a couple of times in the last decade.

The fact the Netherlands have never won a World Cup given they’ve produced some of the greatest players to ever grace the game consistently since the 70s is a massive embarrassment. The size of the nation aside they’ve produced far better players than we have and have blown it consistently.
Think about it - Cruyff, Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard, Koeman, Davids, Bergkamp. It’s down to the same problem as us. Expectation - can’t handle it

Not even close. Their failure to win the 74 World Cup was catastrophic given how superior they were to Germany and how the Netherlands approached that game. Their failure to win anything in the 70s with arguably the greatest players in world football is a massive underachievement
Scraping to a final in 2010 and winning Euro 88 doesn’t come close. You can’t judge footballing nations by population size - it’s a mistake England fans make time and again. Netherlands are not punching above their weight, they are consistent underachievers. On paper they’ve had arguably the best team in the world from 1974 through to 1998 and done fack all with it in the World Cup. Size of population is irrelevant
Just to add, Greece have even won the Euros which hardly puts Netherlands up there in the football hall of fame for international trophies
You haven’t a clue you nonce.
OP
Amazing how England cannot beat any decent teams when it comes to the crunch. It wasn't always like that. When England won the world cup in 1966 they beat
France 2-0
Argentina 1-0
Portugal 2-1
Germany 4-2
Four top teams in the same tournament.

Nowhere near as embarassing as England given they have played in 3 world cup finals and won the euros since Englands last won a major tournamen win.

Where’s Ireland?
We beat Italy at wc 94
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes but that counts as an England win
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How so?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because half your players were English

Simple - mentality. We’re very similar to the Dutch in that respect, we bottle the big games because we haven’t got the mental strength to see it through.
Granted it’s got better (Iceland was a real low point) but it’s not going to improve until we stop talking about 1966, Geoff Hurst finally pops his clogs, there is a change in the belief we have a divine right to win it and we stop thinking we’re better than we are and realise our limitations.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Netherlands may have somewhat similar mentality to us but even they have a better record and I probably would expect them to beat us in a KO game of a tournament.
It should be more excusable for them than it is us anyway, they have a significantly smaller population. With our leagues, our passion for the sport, and our population we are the biggest underachievers in world football.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The fact the Netherlands have never won a World Cup given they’ve produced some of the greatest players to ever grace the game consistently since the 70s is a massive embarrassment. The size of the nation aside they’ve produced far better players than we have and have blown it consistently.

They have still reached 3 WC finals and won a Euros, none of which was at home. I think they punch above their weight if anything.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not even close.

OP
Amazing how England cannot beat any decent teams when it comes to the crunch. It wasn't always like that. When England won the world cup in 1966 they beat
France 2-0
Argentina 1-0
Portugal 2-1
Germany 4-2
Four top teams in the same tournament.

Since we last won the World Cup the Netherlands, with some of the greatest players that have ever played the game, have equalled Greece for major trophies
