Personally I think we do have an issue today whereby people just aren’t prepared to listen to opposing views or not prepared to do it without getting personal or demonising the other side. It happens from both sides of the political spectrum too. Healthily debate is just that, it helps to understand alternative perspectives.

That is a world away however from the conspiracy theory’esk information that gets shared. Things like covid deniers - that’s a public health risk. People who denied things like the Sandy Hook shootings, people who trolled the parents saying they were actors and hadn’t lost their children. The likes of Qanon which make a host of outrageous and unsubstantiated claims. I fail to see the value in these. Fail to understand how these people add anything to society. At best it’s poisonous, at worst a genuine danger.

I don’t want to see people cancelled as such but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with holding people accountable for their views. Hiding behind the principle of free speak? Just cowardice imo.

I was expecting to read some decent points in defence of Musk. It seems there are no reasonable defences and his fans are left to pretend they can't hear the voice of reason.

Musk's takeover of Twitter has been an unmitigated disaster of ionospheric proportions. He isn't even the richest man in the world anymore. He just got displaced as Tesla goes down and twitter running on fumes.

Musk can write a code but Twitter is about social and human relations, not writing code, and writing code is where his genius is. He's a complete mug socially and almost everywhere else.

Also, former twitter employees have started their own social media called "Spill". Will be so funny when it takes over from Twitter and becomes more valuable.

Laugable that people hate on people that are richer, more powerful and more successful than they are

Don't project your greed onto others.
Can't someone dislike a person for their own reasons? As for this instance, he's a pr!ck.

Sadly, Elon 'free speech for me, but not for thee' Musk has revealed himself to be a total hypocrite, whose only goal in buying Twitter was to increase his popularity with other hypocrites, many of whom also just happen to be among the stupidest, nastiest and most dangerous people Earth has to offer

You do realise that generally speaking society is utterly deferential to the rich and famous - putting them on a pedestal whereby quite often they’re not accountable in the way ordinary folk are.

There is visible hero worship of the rich in all aspects of life. Even Musk himself has a huge following, people worship him as a genius of modern times.

Occasionally however, whether someone is rich or poor, you just think they’re a d*ck.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's hard to criticise rich and successful people because people who can't process information or think critically tend to see it as jealousy or hate because that person is rich, without looking at the actual content of the critique.

For many right-wingers whose only life philosophy is "owning the libs", his edgelord antics have sure been entertaining. It certainly hasn't improved the discourse on Twitter.

Elon Musk is just a giant . Nobody doubts that right. He genuinely wants to end up being that bond villain.

The liberals can't tolerate an opinion that differs from their own and just shout or demand the person is cancelled. It's gone too far.

Just cancelling people with a different view isn't the answer. Elon bought a company losing millions and has every right to do what he wants with Twitter.

If snowflakes don't like Twitter any more they can go and use/start a different platform. They won't. Elon won't lose any sleep over it. He loves trolling them. And it entertains plenty of normal people sick of their behaviour too.

Yeah, cause QAnon aren't batch!t crazed loons.

Amplifying and promoting debunked conspiracy theories is not free speech. It's dangerous.

Crossing the raid is dangerous. Having a nut allergy is dangerous. Banking online is dangerous....

So do we ban all and any conspiracy theories? Who determines what ones are harmless fun and which ones arent? The irony when u see the clear left bias and political manipulation on the platform pre Elon.

I'm certainly more liberal than far left or right but an adult using the platform is free to read and believe/research what they want, no matter who they support. Do we ban all religion as well? They talk about people turning water into wine and men chopping the moon in half....that's some pretty outlandish conspiracies there 😂

If people don't like the platform stop using it. Unpopular things fade away. Twitter won't because the people complaining are a minority, and they are just upset their safe space has been compromised, and the obvious political bias has been removed.

Never seen a billionaire or tech genius that wasn't socially inept. Makes total sense.

Musk is a troll of epic proportions because he just loves the fact people can't just ignore what he says, no matter how stupid, and have to react.

Musk works an insane amount and this clearly gives him some sort of therapeutic relief as he watches 'normal' people with much larger problems, blame him for their world ending 😂

Grown adults moaning about social media platforms just seems like it shouldn't even be a thing.

But it's Musk who seems to think he's saving humanity with these 'Twitter files'.

Like it or not, social media is a big deal, and handing so much control to someone like Musk, who seems to be hellbent on annoying good people purely to appeal to bad people, is a little bit worrying to say the least.

But this is what I don't get, this obsession with getting people 'rattled' or 'triggered' or 'owning' them.

I remember hearing stories about Republicans dying of Covid while still refusing to believe it exists, and it honestly doesn't surprise me.

"I don't care if I was wrong, I don't care my actions harmed or massively inconvenienced others, just as long as I was obnoxious and selfish and annoyed a few libs/leftists."

It's just baffling - but it seems to be what the right are all about nowadays. How is that a win for anybody?

I haven't it used Twitter for a while either - not because of Musk, but it's so full of idiots like I've mentioned. And they always moaned, and they're still moaning now.

I did hear a theory that the Republicans might have done a little better in the midterms if the Covid death rate in red counties hadn't been so much higher than in blue counties.

Far be it from my to gloat about people dying, but there would be a sense of poetic justice about this.

But, like I say, I'm not even sure most Republicans care. These people just seem to revel in being wrong.

It really is madness isn't it. It doesn't get much coverage but during covid in the US we saw a mass suicide event from the Republican side, literally hundreds of thousands died because they went out of their way to ignore any safety measures like vaccinations or masks just to stick two fingers up to the Democrats. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so dumb.

was going to say this as well. It is so hilariously ridiculous isn't it. The average republican IQ is 5-6 points lower than the average democrat and it shows.

To be honest at this stage, you have to wonder who is triggered and rattled by whom. Is it really the "liberals" who are triggered or is it Musk who has tried since taking over to get his way and had to backtrack on multiples occasions? I mean at this rate, he's going to make the UK conservative party look like they knew what they were doing.

The latest one being Twitter trying to stop links towards other socials media and accounts.
Under EU laws, this is not possible apparently (I'm not a lawyer so don't have full picture). But supposedly, it would then make Twitter an editorial media (not a social one anymore) and that mean more more scrutiny with possible civil and criminal liabilities, something I'm sure he doesn't want to.
