Seen it even before when we played Wolves

Terrible quality video and the worst angle. The angle from behind which is the one they used on MOTD showed the foul clearly.

I haven't seen the replays myself, but it seems very disingenuous to give what is evidently the worst possible angle.

Yeah looks like he didn't touch him from that angle, even though that's the angle you see Gakpo with his eyes on the ball, pulling his leg back to shoot. From the angle from behind you see the defender clip the leg that is about to striker the ball which trips him. The defender didn't even complain, he knew.

It's obvious there's a clip. The only way it isn't given is if the ref misses it and there isn't a single angle that provides VAR with better evidence of the contact.

It should have been disallowed for the swan dive performed by Kakpo.
10/10 for the dive though.

Seriously though, I play football 3 times a week and if I'm tripped, I never throw my hands in the air like that.

Should've not been a pen for the pathetic theatrics.

Catching up on MOTD. There are people who think that Liverpool penalty shouldn't have been a penalty?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Soft but clear penalty. Attacker brings his leg back to shoot, defender clips that leg into the other, tripping him.

Bournemouth fans were going mad throughout the game and the manager was in on the action also, however it was a feisty game, which Bournemouth were more than happy to participate in.

Id say the referee did a good job. I thought VVD got away with one, when he barged a Bournemouth player in the back. Mac Allister could have been off also, personally I would give a yellow for it but I can see how some might.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It wasn't soft. Gakpo was running through on goal and got clipped by the defender which caused his legs to tangle and make him fall over. If you have ever tried running in your life and someone clips your back leg then you'd understand. In these situations when people say that the player tripped themselves after minimal contact then they need to be burnt alive or buried at sea.

Yeah, when I say soft I mean he just slightly catches him but that's enough for the foul.

Although I will say if you watched the full game, the referee let a lot of 'soft' fouls go. People talk about consistency of refereeing which I think is a fallacy anyhow, as different referees will see things different even using the same laws and guidance. However you at least expect that to be the case during one game. However penalties carry a different weight for obvious reasons, Gakpo is about to strike the ball at goal, he's fouled. It's a clear penalty.

You won't find any referees who will disagree with the decision. Shockingly the MOTD commentator stated he was surprised it wasn't overturned despite him having the best angle. All pundits at the end of the game agreed it was a penalty.

The effect is identical to an ankle tap tackle in rugby.

The difference is that in football sometimes it's accidental rather than the chasing player actively trying to bring his opponent down, but the issue of intentionality is itself very blurry.

posted on 2/2/25

I had doubts myself but that reverse angle is clear, Gakpo's trailing leg moves to the side as he's clipped.

There have been countless incidents where the majority of people have said "he's tripped himself" without understanding what causes them to trip themselves. It's still a foul and those not understanding it should have their football watching accounts blocked or should be forced to run around a track and with someone clipping their trailing leg over and over and see how many times they can avoid tripping themselves up. They do as many laps as they can before they either apologise and promise to learn from it or they keep going until they die. Tripping themselves to death. It will be noted as suicide, stating that the deceased tripped themselves up to death.

But you’re just downright bitter. You were having an epic meltdown about the penalty during the game, and then got proved wrong. But you can’t just let it go, proper fingers in your ear stuff. Embarrassing.

It was a pen, how Macallister never saw red is the real mystery

Should VAR be able to check potential 2nd yellows which are obvious?

Or overturn incorrect 2nd yellows?

I hold my hands up as I thought it wasn’t a penalty on the stream I was watching but watched match of the day and it was nailed on

Think macallister got away with a 2nd yellow though , slot must have thought the same as subbed him off pretty quickly

Mac10 was fortunate not to get a 2nd yellow. The first was very harsh though, he just stood still and someone ran into him after knocking it around him. Maybe deserved that luck seeing as he was wrongly sent off vs them last season.

Still not going to convince those with faulty brains. They think because it was a soft touch on him then it is less of a foul. Misunderstanding the impact of a soft touch on someone's stride when they are running. With their malfunctioning brains. Identify each of them and organise mass euthanasia.

I am sure Gakpoo could have run despite.

Only thing you can complain about with the pen is consistency. The Evanilson one vs Brentford wasnt given.
