As the eighth-best eligible ranked team in the UEFA rankings. Former Super League partners Barcelona did Juventus a favour in spring 2024, knocking Napoli out of the Champions League in the round of 16 and therefore making it impossible for them to overtake Juventus in the rankings.

FC Salzburg qualified for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup through their UEFA club coefficient ranking, based on their performances in the UEFA Champions League over the four seasons from 2020-21 to 2023-24. The tournament, expanded to 32 teams, allocated 12 spots to European clubs, with the last four Champions League winners (Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain) automatically qualifying. The remaining eight spots were awarded based on UEFA rankings, but with a rule limiting each country to a maximum of two teams, unless more than two clubs from the same country won the Champions League during the qualifying period.

Salzburg, ranked 18th in the UEFA coefficients, secured the final European spot after Arsenal’s elimination by Bayern Munich in the 2023-24 Champions League quarter-finals. Arsenal could have qualified by winning the Champions League, but their exit meant the spot was reallocated to the highest-ranked eligible club not already qualified, which was Salzburg. This was possible because Austria had no other teams in the competition, unlike countries like England, Spain, and Italy, which had already filled their two-team quotas. Salzburg’s consistent participation in the Champions League group stage, despite only reaching the round of 16 once and dropping to the Europa League twice, earned them enough points to edge out other notable clubs like Barcelona, Liverpool, and AC Milan, which were blocked by the two-team-per-country rule.

So if Celtic qualify from the mega group again the next couple of seasons then they have a good chance of making the next world cup
