He even admitted leaning into the ball there with his arm. That makes it deliberate. Trying to hide behind the down beside your side thing. Why not just hold the ball in your hand down by your side and run up to the other end and score? That's what Tarkowski is saying. Allowed to use your hand if it's down by your side? Ok mate.

You are. If it was blasted at him from a metre away and he couldn't get out the way then obviously not a pen. But he moved towards it knowing full well that his arm would be the only thing to block the goal. Distance and movement towards the ball in terms of intent are two things considered. The other thing is the arm being in an unnatural position, which doesn't supersede the other two things considered.


Hence my analogy about running up the field with the ball tucked under your arm cos your arm is down by your side.

He moved to block a goal with his arm. Possibly one of the 1% of handballs that actually should be punished with the opposition getting a high chance at scoring from the spot. Compared to an outstretched arm getting hit at the side of the box when there was no chance that it would result in a goal.

Final question for pun, if Tarkowski was on the goal line and did that exact same thing, i.e moving across to block the ball from going in, using his arm as a weirdly rigid extension of his body, to block the goal, would it be a pen?

Not extended. That's not the point. Extension of his body that he used whilst throwing himself at the ball, to block the ball.

Maybe he should have got one of the backroom staff to bind his upper body in bandages like a mummy before the game?

Or not used his arm to block the goal? Just because it's down by his side doesn't mean he can lean across to block a goal with it.

Again, it's absolutely not the case that the ball has been blasted at him from close range and he couldn't get his arm out of the way in time, he has actively moved towards it and in that split second used his arm to block it.

The intent comes from actively moving towards the ball to block it. It was the same as the Steven Taylor on the line one where he couldn't cut his arm off.

Like if someone does a two footed challenge and you claim "where was he supposed to put his legs? Cut them off?" When the player has actively lunged towards the opposition player.

Not just before. Just as the shot has been taken. He reacted to the deflection. Of course he is allowed to move to block it but not using the arm to make the body bigger. Which he did. And blocked it. It doesn't need to be outstretched in some wacky wailing infatlable tube man way to be intentionally making the body bigger. He knows he has an arm and moves across with this knowledge in mind to block the ball. He's a clever boy. Someone I think I have always given credit to for being intelligent and sophisticated. In a world full of Brexit type players, I think we sometimes need to appreciate the intelligence of players like Tarkowski. Even sounds like a russian composer of sorts. Just this time his intelligence has gotten the better of him.
