Since Jose left in 2021 we've bought...
Gil (25m + whatever Lamela was worth, say £45m total)
Royal 25m
Bentancur 19m
Sarr 16m
Kulu Loan (40m overall)
Romero 50m
Richy 58m
Bissouma 30m
Udogie 18m
Spence 15m
Perisic Free
Forster Free
Lenglet Loan
That's a total of £315m
Make of that what you want but I call that being backed. We've just bought too many shiiiiit players. That's my assessment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This.
It's always easy blame the owners but the people choosing these players and the manager need to take a massive portion of the blame.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I cannot pick too much fault with the shopping list Emerson has been a dud. Sarr Gil and Spence are more "potential" the rest have improved our team and squad.
What's missing is the top quality CB and RWB we need and options for CM.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's break this down then because as far as I'm concerned there's a major disconnect between owner /sporting director buys and what Conte wants...
Gil 45m - barely plays
Royal 25m - absolute dud, barely plays
Bentancur 19m - top signing
Sarr 16m - only plays when others are injured
Kulu Loan (40m overall) - best signing
Romero 50m - good player, ill-disciplined though.
Richy 58m - doesn't play, bench.
Bissouma 30m - doesn't play, bench.
Udogie 18m - on loan
Spence 15m - doesn't play, barely on the bench.
Perisic Free - plays, underwhelming.
Forster Free - bench
Lenglet Loan - plays every now and then.
So £315m and of that lot on two play week in, week out. That's a major problem. Why aren't they all on the same page? Everyone we sign should be to slot in the first team because the one dropping out automatically strengthens the squad anyway.
Conte can moan all he wants but money has been spent, presumably on players he wanted. Why isn't he playing them?

It was so painfully obvious we desperately needed a rwb and a lcb.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can't always get what you want....🎶
I'm starting to grow tired of Conte and these defensive tactics when our squad is tailored to an attacking progressive manager.
Our attackers are class. Kane, Son and Kulu as good as any front 3 around. Richarlison a great backup. Gil has talent. Probably need another for depth.
Midfield is very good. Bentancur top quality, Bissouma looked top class at Brighton. Hoijberg solid and reliable. Sarr looks a talent.
Our defense and keeper bar Romero are a joke, but if we played to our strengths and attacked they wouldn't be under so much pressure and fack up so much.
Imo kane is gone this summer. Conte is not long term. The squad isn't going to be good enough short term to compete. So might as well cut our losses now and build for the future.

spurs are within the top 15 spending clubs in the world. to say that managers dont get backed is insane
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its relative mate. Chelsea have spent 400m in 1.5 windows. ETH had £220 in 1 window..
These clubs tend to just go out and ge the players they want. We haggle. We kinda have to but every now and then, if its a key player we should just spend.
Conte wanted Bastoni, Inter didnt want to sell but no doubt a deal could have been done....but in the back of Spurs mind will be that he'll be cheaper this January and with 1 year left in the summer, probably half price then....which is when someone else will step in.
Porro is £40m. If we want quality players who will improve us they cost money. £40m is nothing in this market. That Chelsea guy from Brighton cost £60m & he's pants!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
you say 220m like its nothing !! 220m !!! yeah your right you dont back your managers!
are ome EPL fans that much out of the loop when it comes to football when 220m isnt a lot and isnt backing a manager !!. mental
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's a big Scottish chip on your shoulder.
As said, its all relative. 220m is a lot of money, yes, but its only 4 or 5 quality players in this league or may be 3 top quality players.
220m get you Gibbs-White (42m) Richarlison (60m) Cucurella (60m) Paqueta (£51m) ....none of which have had a great impact at their clubs and none considered the highest level of talent.
Gil 45m - barely plays
Royal 25m - absolute dud, barely plays
Bentancur 19m - top signing
Sarr 16m - only plays when others are injured
Kulu Loan (40m overall) - best signing
Romero 50m - good player, ill-disciplined though.
Richy 58m - doesn't play, bench.
Bissouma 30m - doesn't play, bench.
Udogie 18m - on loan
Spence 15m - doesn't play, barely on the bench.
Perisic Free - plays, underwhelming.
Forster Free - bench
Lenglet Loan - plays every now and then.
Or you could say
Gil 45m - has looked decent when he plays
Royal 25m - absolute dud, barely plays
Bentancur 19m - top signing
Sarr 16m - a real talent, that has broken through into the first XI
Kulu Loan (40m overall) - best signing
Romero 50m - good player, ill-disciplined though.
Richy 58m - will be a big player for Spurs
Bissouma 30m - first season, and will improve
Udogie 18m - back next season, and will be first choice in all probability
Spence 15m - pointless signing
Perisic Free - decent player
Forster Free - decent back up keeper.
Lenglet Loan - looks about Spurs best CB right now
The slant you have put on these signings is hilarious Fridge. Completely one sided.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The 2nd half showed that is we take more risks we are better, we can do it but a clearly under instruction not to.
Conte-ball is built of better defenders who are more capable on the ball and wingbacks who are a true attacking threat. With this, and an upgrade on PEH (or Bissouma given the chance to make it his spot) i think COnte-ball becomes less defensive because there would be better quality attacking and passing players on the pitch. I am tired of seeing Dier boot it long without any accuracy, PEH pass it backwards and sideways, or lose it if he tries anything else, Sessegnon afraid to attack a ball in defence and unable to go past anyone in attack and Lloris' distribution has done my head in for years. Their second yesterday came from a pointless boot up field and he should have saved it too!
I think the problem is a lot deeper than just the transfer market.
God knows how many managers Levy has appointed but only 3 have been what could be termed a success in Joel, Rednapp and Poch.
Mourinho never stays anywhere long neither does Conte so when "new" managers come in its the same old "they are not my players I need to buy" excuses that come up.
Target somebody who we think will be with us at least 5 years. Somebody who does not have a massive name because we are not going to get instant success anyway.
Make it a coach who will entertain as well as get results. Eddie Howe was out of work for god knows how long and look at the impact he has had at newcastle. Poch done similar to us although to be fair he never won anything.
The constant manager changes breeds player changes and we keep going around in circles. If I was Levy I would be having a pop at getting the Brentford manager maybe.
As for some of the signings they have simply dreadful over the years. Royal, Sessengon, Aurier etc.
We have supposed experts, DOF, scouts and other recruitment, personell, how we sign some of the players we do is just unbelievable.
Conte will walk soon, Levy will then get some "top manager" from outer mongolia and the roundabout will spin around like it has for the last 7 or 8 years.
It's not helpful looking at the headline numbers. 20m on Spence is a signing but it's not backing the manager. Just like Rodon wasn't backing Jose etc etc etc. Levy won't let go of the reigns long enough for us to be successful.

Every manager has to play the game to some extent. If we were signing players only for one manager each time, then what's the point in having a sporting director? We need continuity and signings like Spence do that. Otherwise you're spending 300m on Conte and then another 300m when the next manager comes in. The problem is that Levy doesn't have a clear philosophy so he keeps flip-flopping which means players keep getting players they don't want.

Yeah exactly on the flip flopping. He hires a DoF but doesn't actually put him in charge of the football decisions. You're asking managers to play the game while changing the rules all the time. There's a reason none of our managers have had proper success under Levy. add's had it spot on in his article.
I rate Conte and we definitely without question need to improve the squad, but there's not a lot Conte is doing managerially at the moment to justify why he's so good. Tactics aren't great, stubbornness with formations, with his refusal to play Spence. He's not improving any player. It could be any old manager asking for money to spend right now.
The only thing you could say he's doing well at is half time team talks, but then perhaps we shouldn't be so poor in the first halves.

Reggy - Decent player

Hojbjerg - Not good enough, squad player at best
Rodon - Not good enough
Vinicius - Not good enough
Hart - Not good enough
Bale - Came to Spurs unfit and to gain fitness
This is not backing the manager, this is a collection of squad fillers and token cheap signings.
Here is a plan, why not go out and pay for top quality for once (everybody has a price), instead of littering the squad with below standard players, who subsequently linger around like a bad smell

They're valid criticisms and of course he's not beyond questioning, but you can level most of those at any manager. They'll have a preferred formation and style, they'll not rate players fans want to see etc.
We're all pist off with how this season's going but we're not Nuno 3-0, clueless everywhere bad. Conte in or out we need some stability and a plan. Arteta had Arenal near the relegation places for a while and they stuck with him. We've got so much deadwood floating around and uncertainty, you'd be bringing someone else into a proper shambles. Look at Potter and Chelsea, that'd likely be us but they'd be expected to win the CL with Trossard

That's all true of course and even the best managers can be made to look average in certain circumstances so this isn't just down to Conte. I think there should be at least some signs of hope or progression this season though to persist with Conte.
Arteta is the example of a club sticking with a manager and giving them time, but there was a steady progression with each season. Obviously he came in and won the FA Cup firstly, then his first full season he finished 8th with a slightly higher points total with 61 points, then 5th the next with 69 points, and now currently in 1st.
With Conte he started strongly finishing 4th with 71 points. In this his first full season are there any signs of progress so far? It doesn't seem like it to me. For me we need to try and finish the season strongly or just show something that tells us we aren't in fact going backwards.

The manager has been backed but its a work in progress. 1 summer window so far. The January window was a stunning success in 2022.
Over the next 2 windows he really needs to get in a GK, RWB, CB, CB, CM for the first XI and we could really do with some progress towards that now. Porro linked a lot but really its the CB position that is critical.
My criticism of the ownership is not that we do not spend, i am glad we look to get deals which means our budgets go further. What frustrates me is that we never just go out and get the player we want. Right now Bastoni is at Inter and Conte wants him. The lad (23) has 18 months left on his deal. In the summer he'll be much sought after and probably worth about 30-40m. Lets chuck 60m at them now, and give the lad a bumper wage. Do what Chelsea have done and make it a long contract, to spread the cost but lets just get him in. Porro is £40m. If thats the price then pay it, pay it last week. Its a big lump of money but thats what top 4 players cost.
One of our biggest problems which is probably why the ownership sit on their hands too long is the dead wood needs shifting. 8-10 players need moving on.
But i really thought that £150m injection from the ownership would have eased this situation...not just allowing big spending but being able to get players in without having to sell first. Soften the blow of paying wages for 3 RBs/RWBs, allowing us to buy the 4th and moving on the rejects when we find a buyer.
It hasnt really worked that way. Its a very tight ship. Our budgets and spending have increased a lot since the stadium but the approach to buying sees to have remained the same.

spurs are within the top 15 spending clubs in the world. to say that managers dont get backed is insane

The problem is that Levy doesn't have a clear philosophy so he keeps flip-flopping which means players keep getting players they don't want.

chip?? just calling it like it is chief.
to say that a: spurs managers are not backed or b: ENIC havent backed you is not consistent with the facts.
I think its perfectly reasonable to suggest that Conte can and should be doing better with the backing he has had and used Arsenal and Arteta as evidence of this.

I found it strange at the time we made the Lo Celso deal permanent. He has knees made of glass

Lo Celso (permanent) - Not suited to the PL
Reggy - Decent player
Doherty - Not good enough

Since Jose left in 2021 we've bought...
Gil (25m + whatever Lamela was worth, say £45m total)
Royal 25m
Bentancur 19m
Sarr 16m
Kulu Loan (40m overall)
Romero 50m
Richy 58m
Bissouma 30m
Udogie 18m
Spence 15m
Perisic Free
Forster Free
Lenglet Loan
That's a total of £315m
Make of that what you want but I call that being backed. We've just bought too many shiiiiit players. That's my assessment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not see too many shiiit players in your list.
Maybe Royal and Sarr.
Jury is out on Bissouma. and Spence.
You could add Skipp.
But if you mean to say the manager has been backed,
I'd say you're making the wrong argument.
You need to look at the 11 positions and say which are well covered.
