Maddison would be the best signing for me to offer genuine direct competition and rotation for Bruno.

Creates chances very well, dangerous in the number 10 role and with set pieces, can drop back a little and play in a midfield 3 if needed.

English too.

Is my weak grasp of maths and Premier League rules letting me down here, or am I right to calculate that Amad will only just miss out on qualifying as 'homegrown' when he turns 21 on the basis that we signed him a couple of months after his 18th birthday? Is this yet another instance of Ed Woodward dithering about a signing costing the club?

If you had played professional football, Winston, you'd know: if he's side on, he's meant it. End of.

Personally, I thought it could have gone either way. There wasn't much force, but the trajectory of the challenge meant it wouldn't require much more to have resulted in a nasty injury.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So you think he could have been sent off for violent conduct?

I think that’s a stretch, to say the least.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I've seen softer red cards than that, and nastier challenges escape punishment.

No offence, but that’s utterly meaningless.

Fred, Lindelof, Casper and Martial should all be shifted to free up some non-homegrown spaces in the squad.

Of course Van de Beek as well how could I forget.

The homegrown rule shouldn't be a problem.

He’s pretty forgettable. Especially when he’s on the pitch.

Could he not just have been trying to get a foot on the ball to try and stop the clearance and keep the ball up their end?

I agree it could have caused injury as Faes had his foot planted, and it definitely could have been a red, but I still think it was more of a waved leg than anything deliberate or violent.

Yeah, he won’t qualify. And we’ve already had to register Pellistri. I don’t see the point in Amad and Pellistri being registered. It’d be a waste of at least one spot.

I think most likely Pellistri will be gone.

I'm sure we could easily come up with a 'Shouldn't be here next season' XI based on all these names!

Henderson

Williams
Bailly
Maguire
Telles

Jones
VDB

Elanga
Martial
Pellistri

Weghorst (I like Weggy but trying to be realistic here)

I'm sure there are more as well that some would care to name.

I'd definitely keep Lindelof out of those 4. Shouldn't be a starter but he's rarely let us down when called upon this season. If he's happy with a squad role we'd be foolish to let him go. Can't see anyone taking Martial either if I'm honest so we may just have to run down his deal and hope he can play a part.

I don't think it matters what you tried to do, just what you did. What he did was catch the player high up the leg, with a straight leg, studs first. To me that's a red card.

Think Nani, when he tried to control the ball in the CL, or Mane when he tried to control the ball but Ederson came charging in face first and Mane caught Ederson's face. Both reds.

Although as I said before, it's a subjective one.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, it's meaningful to me in that whether the outcome of such a tackle is a red card or not relates not to what it says in the rule book *in the abstract*, but also on how referees tend to deal with such challenges in practice. There's always an element of judgement and interpretation, which will always result in a degree of subjectivity. Within the averaged mass of outcomes, there will be swathes of tackles that are always / never red cards based on collective interpretation of the law and in the middle a swathe that might be seen differently. Due to Sabitzer's challenge leading with the studs, even though the velocity was not significant, the mass of the leg added impact, and the fact that the leg was planted made the risk of injury greater. This is why I could understand a referee perceiving it as a potentially dangerous challenge. On the other hand, I don't think there was evidence of violent intent (contrary to Souness's hilarious assertion) and there wasn't great force or follow-through. So overall, I think a red would have been a bit soft but if you asked 100 referees to watch that challenge, I'd guess maybe 20 would send him off. And maybe you'd be right, Winston, in telling them they were wrong to do so.

We're assuming Maguire leaves as well, right?

Yep. We should sign two cb’s this summer to replace Maguire and Lindelof.

….

That is exactly what he was trying to do. It was bloody obvious if you watch the replay. And that is quite clearly what VAR determined.

No idea what RR is on about to be honest. You don’t have to be a professional footballer to know how to foul.

I would be happy with Lindelof staying as 4th choice CB for games when we may rotate both Martinez and Varane in cup early stages etc, or a bad injury crisis.

Not many sides will have better 4th options, probably not 3rd choice either but in our case and needing to manage Varane we really need a 3rd choice CB to be as good as our first 2, because he’d likely play as many games over the season as Varane.

I realised after I wrote that response that RR was (I think) paraphrasing Souness sarcastically. His next post says he doesn't think there was evidence of intent.

Problem is that Shaw’s probably been a more useful back up to Martinez because ETH likes a left footer at cb. So considering that, we could do with signing one. That makes Lindelof redundant because he’s not good enough to back up Varane on the right side. A back up left footer and a guy that can challenge Varane are needed.

It matters if you're talking about intent, which I was. As I said, it could conceivably have been a red given what actually happened but I think a yellow might have been enough.

I don’t ever listen to Souness so would have no idea. If that is the case then fair enough RR.

Funnily enough the former dip pundit that I had commentating the game, Jim Beglin was of the same opinion and wouldn’t shut up about it. It was like they don’t understand what they are seeing in these replays.

This is very common with Beglin.
