3pm tv blackout

It doesn't make much sense to me that a La Liga or Bundesliga game can't be shown in that time slot.
No-one is going to stay in to watch Freiburg vs Ausberg rather than going to watch their own team.

Broadcasters don't want to show 3pm games, and it is unlikely that they would put on a big PL game or OF game at 3 as you limit the "neutral" audience by a lot.

Do midweek attendances drop when they clash with CL or stay similar to non-CL midweek games? I'd guess the latter in general.

Imo everything should be done to help lower league clubs, but I would say the blackout has a minor impact.

I watch my semi pro Isthmian club and crowds on a Saturday are pretty consistent around 500 regardless of spurs/arsenal/west ham playing on those days. Even at this level people have season tickets and go to every away game.

I'd suggest if they did remove the blackout it's on the premise lower level clubs get a good chunk of the additional money generated.

Ever since I moved to Oz I can watch any game I want any time I want and haven’t illegally streamed a game in years. It’s so bizarre that the rule in the UK still exists. I know why it does but I’m sure lower league clubs will always have their die hard fans that never miss games no matter who’s playing on Saturday at 3.

I mean, all the Premier League have to do is make sure there are no big games at 3pm that would draw fans away (which they do anyway)

If there was any real appetite to show every PL game they would just move the bulk to Sunday, and the rest spread around (Friday nights Saturday 1230/530 and Monday nights) mirroring Spain or Italy.

I think for bigger clubs that are in competitions like CL etc the rule is irrelevant as they'd sell out anyway. But to use an example of Scottish lower league on BBC Scotland where you can get it for free and stay warm or at least used to when you could afford to put the heating on the attendance I think suffers. But clubs like them aren't likely to be on tv much anyway so probably aren't impacted

Doesn't the NFL have a rule that if the attendance isnt a certain percent of capacity then the game isn't shown locally?

Honestly don't see the point of it anymore with all the illegal streams.

It seems stupid that fans in other countries can watch these games but locals cant.

You would think it would be the other way round.

As with other things give people the means to access games legally otherwise many will happily do it illegally. The blackout thing is an absolute load of nonsense.

I think there are a myriad of factors to consider. As far as I'm aware, the rule is in place primarily to discourage fans of lower league teams from not going to watch their team and instead watching whatever PL game is on TV.

Firstly, having the 12.30 and 5.30 game may already impact this. If you are keen to watch that game and can't make it to or back from the ground of your local team in that time then what's the difference?

You can now stream pretty much any game illegally if you really want to watch it. Whilst there might be some who don't know how or choose not to because they don't like to, its widespread enough that teenagers and pensioners are all able to do it these days.

I'd scrap the ban but, as suggested above, use it as an excuse to look at how money is split down the pyramid.

Why? I can't get to a game, so doesn't stop my attendance, plus, I pay the club, as I have done for the last 20 odd years.

Becuase locals should be able to see it as well.

Surely you prioritise home fans over away fans.

I live in london yet i cant pay to watch celtic games due to this stupid rule.

How does this rule boost attendances at any ground?

All it does is make people buy illegal streams rather than pay for legal ones.

We are behind the times with this rule. Makes sense in the 20th century not the 21st though.

85% of tickets must be sold by 72 hours before k.o. or its blacked out locally.

.co.uk probably. Just saying being abroad shouldn't bar me from seeing Celtic games. Understand what you mean, but I can't get to Glasgow easily. You can, albeit takes a while. The issue isn't easy though, I'll give you that 👍
