Pau Torres is another leftie. Two left footed CB rarely play together so he’d just have been back up to Lisandro.

I’m surprised we’re not in for Timber but FFP likely won’t allow it.

If Maguire is sold, I’d be tempted to take a punt on Bella-Kotchap who apparently has a £25 release clause.

I don't think we're forgetting it. We've been pretty heavily linked with both Kim and Desasi.

My guess is we're waiting on some certainty around Maguire's future before we make a move there. Obviously we risk missing out on targets in the meantime but we also can't afford to buy players we don't really need this summer.

I don't see Maguire staying but fwiw, if he does, I think he and that whole back line will be a bit more comfortable with a more confident keeper behind them.

It does seem a younger player is a good profile for that 4th CB spot. Obviously dependant on whether we can ship Maguire, if so it'd be a huge risk to go into next season with 3 CB's, one of whom is injury prone.

€25 million btw

I guess it all depends on what happens to Maguire, if we sell then we're likely to get a bit of money which can go on a replacement. I heard our back up CB plan was Disasi at Monaco?

Hopefully we can sell/release a few players this summer. So far we've made €1m from sales compared to Chelsea who have made over €200m.

Shame we don't have feeder clubs in Saudi to buy all our leftovers.

De Gea
Henderson
Maguire
Bailly
Tuanzebe
Jones
Telles
Williams
Fred
VdB
Elanga

Surely we can get a bit of money for these and/or reduce the wage bill considerably.

We definitely could do with a young CB who provides better back-up and competition to Varane than Maguire while costing less in wages. But it's fourth priority at best, so 1982's point is crucial: can we afford that player we want?

The fact that we haven't opted for a 'first phase specialist' in midfield does make me wonder if there's a masterplan in the bag, because Varane isn't great on the ball.

Busby

I heard Ziyech's transfer has fallen through and the other 2 they got fees for weren't huge tbf. They've done far better selling to us and Arsenal in recent years.

I think the issue we have, which is quite unique to us, is that Verane is only every available for 2/3 of a season, so we'll likely need to use our 3rd and 4th choice a fair bit.

Tbf to Varane, the 3 injuries he got last season were all different and none of them kept him out that long. Hopefully now he's retired from International football he can get more rest.

It's an interesting point... Maybe if the right keeper is brought in, ETH will be fine to give Maguire another try (he seems to panic around DDG and vice versa, but not with Pickford).

Busby, we certainly can't proceed on the assumption that Varane will play every match. But I think we should also be planning for succession too. He's an outstanding defender but he's not as good as, e.g. Lindelof, when it comes to build-up play. If we can't afford a world-class player like Kim from Napoli, this would be an ideal time to bring in a young defender who may not be ready for a starting role but with a very high ceiling.

DDG amplifies any uncertainties around the defence, that's for sure. But it's also true that in international football it's quite uncommon to be pressed high with the kind of intensity and sophisticated coordination of a top club side. We know that with a bit of time and space, Harry Maguire is good at picking out a pass or ambling forward into space. Now would seem an opportune time to replace him: we don't look desperate in the transfer market (as we'd be recruiting for a squad player) and it should be possible to get a net reduction in the wage bill, a net gain in transfer revenue/expenditure, while bringing in a younger player with a better profile fit for the football we want to play.

If we bought him, we could feel rueful that he had Gabriel Heinze were born in different generations.
