Looks like Jonny Evans is staying

Amazing he still only like 35, been around forever it feels like

As least Carlton Cole isn’t still around to destroy him

Don’t think he’ll start a single game tbf.

Suppose there’s no massive downside to it.

We must have just been really reluctant to not have any Fergie era players in the squad after Jones & DDG left.

Can't wait to see who we bring in next summer!

He could mentor Greenwood.

Isn't it obvious? 6 month loan of Phil Jones in January bookmark it.

Evans should never have left imo. Good attitude, decent on the ball, solid defender who was brought through with all the club values in the Fergie era.

Even last season I though Leicester looked better with him in the side.

If Maguire leaves, and with Veranes fitness record, it's likely we will need 4x CBs, although in an ideal world we'd sign one and not rely on Evans in any instance.

Shaw stepping into CB is still an option too. He was actually really good there I thought which is testament to how good of a player he is.

Malacia would need to step up massively in that instance though or Dalot would at LB.

Not a bad idea as a 5th choice if we have no money.
But if Maguire does leave, and when we get our usual defensive crisis with 3 key injuries in five minutes… I’ll be a little concerned!

Also… didn’t realise Mahrez is 32… how have city got £30m for him

Maguire and Mctominay both leaving leaves us vulnerable in the air though.

And Foden is better than him anyway. Only makes their first 11 stronger.

They will probably need to sign a squad player though.

Don’t think he’ll play, hopefully, if he does he’ll get exposed badly like he did for Leicester

I suppose they don't play much though. Hojlund is over six foot as well isn't he so that could help plug that gap.

Mahrez is better than Foden. He’s been a much more important player for them, which is why he starts more.

Disagree and so do a lot of City fans.

Foden for me is the better player but I think there's something in him that drives Pep mad. Rumours of discipline issues with him a lot.

For me Foden is potentially world class. Mahrez has been a very good player as well but I don't think he has that extra level Foden does.

Just my opinion.

Little evidence of it on the pitch. Mahrez has performed at a much higher level for both Leicester and City than Foden ever has. Foden’s a squad player for a reason.

posted on 28/7/23

Same for England where he’s regularly benched and outperformed by his teammates.

They weren’t on the pitch for much of last season anyway. Casemiro is as good if not better in the air than McTominay anyway and Varane is every bit as good as Maguire in that sense.

Foden is very young still. I think you're forgetting that.

Most City fans I know prefer Foden. A lot of them don't like Mahrez and say he plays for himself rather than the team

posted on 28/7/23

Mahrez had 1 year left on his contract, he's also 10 years older than Foden.

Very different players - Foden tracks back and gets stuck in more, off-field antics may have slightly limited his playing time last season. Mahrez was brilliant on his day but blew hot and cold, did score important goals though in big games

I imagine they both played the same number of minutes last season.

We paid twice that for Casemiro who’s not much younger.

This is why I don’t want to even consider Shaw at LB, he’s too important in our build up play and the drop off at LB I huge without imo.

Just because he’s young and City fans you know prefer an academy product doesn’t make it so. Mahrez is just a better footballer, there’s plenty of evidence on the pitch to show that.
