FA Cup memory lane...

A tournament Spurs have taken seriously about 2 times in the past 20 years - I do so hope that changes this year.

It’s a great cup and there is nothing quite like the 3rd round weekend. We play on ITV tomorrow night against Burnley, we’ve won 17 of our last 18 3rd round ties and I hope we add to that tomorrow. I suspect we will rotate a bit but given our injuries there isn’t too many Ange can change.

3 final victories over Chelsea....facking anthony taylor still makes me angry the sanchez handball and kovacic red card.

Anyway, love the fa cup, the early round upsets, the weird match ups, the cold weather with snow/rain where a big team has to go to somewhere like torquay.

First match of football I really remember is the 94 cup final.
Chelsea were nowhere near the team they are now but it was the start of the resurgence with the glenn hoddle era which led to gullit then zola, desailly and over stars.

Chelsea beat utd home and away that season, and were the better team in the first half hitting the crossbar through gavin peacock (scored in those home and away wins in the league (both 1-0)).

But david elleray stepped in and gave utd two pens in 6 minutes, the second of which was never a pen in a million years, and that was game over.

I was at that game with my grandad, he was a big United fan and I was the only person willing to go with him - he had 2 tickets. Being younger I didn’t really care that Spurs weren’t involved and just wanted to watch the match. I also got dragged to the Arsenal vs Sheff Wed cup final with my other grandad who was a Gooner - no idea how we kept getting cup final tickets.

Think Liverpool - Newcastle might be the first FA Cup final I have a vague childhood memory of, but the most memorable definitely Ipswich's win in 1978.

The first ever game of Football I watched on TV was the 78 cup final, which Ipswich won 1-0. This still is the most boring game I've seen.
best game is probably the Utd-Arsenal 99 replay or the 2006 final.
Like to add the 81 replay as well with Ricky Villa.

Wigan beating Man City 1-0 was hilarious, think I lost about £50 that day.

I remember United getting to play faaaacking Millwall in a cup final - what a joke.

City pumping Watford in a final

Arsenal getting Hull in a final

Some proper schitty final line ups

Love the FA cup but teams love playing Leeds. We have enough cup upsets to open a museum exhibit. We play L1 high flyers on Sunday, definite banana skin as we ain't great away, in the cup, and against lower league opposition, especially all of the above 😅

The Liverpool 3-3 v West Ham was a cracker of a final.

Had that one one TV and Hearts v Gretna in the Scottish Cup final on the other both went to pens, both underdogs heartbroken.

Portsmouth vs Cardiff. Their runs were pretty pathetic as well.

Time slowed as it happened, a great goal but horrible to watch for some of us.

Portsmouth did knock out the future European champions, albeit with a slice of good fortune.

"the robbery in 2005 as a Scholes penalty miss allowed Vieira to end his Arsenal career by scoring the winning penalty after United failed to score against a Senderos led defence despite almost total dominance for 120 minutes."

Yes still remember this. Bergkamp up top on his own wasnt he? Just remember us launching balls up to him, expecting god knows what. Was a pretty shocking performance but dont remember Lehmann making more than 1 or 2 genuine great saves?

For this weekend, though we could go full strength based on our past couple of games we'd be pumped. Would like to see it freshened up, get ESR in, maybe Havertz up top, Nelson as well needs minutes.

Not just three cup finals, I vividly remember the start of the millennium when Chelsea were in the midst of that horrible league run cd Arsenal, drawing you in the cup 4 years in a row 2001-2004 and just laughing at the consistency of defeats you log took. Every game looked the same too where you’d play really well, not take chances and then willingly bend over as we either strung some moves together or had someone do something spectacular to take you out with clinical efficiency. It just got to the point of ridiculous by the time Reyes put you out in his debut. Guess you guys and Wayne Bridge ultimately had the last laugh that year though!

Ipswich played a great match in '78, comprehensively outplaying Arsenal and hitting the woodwork three times before finally scoring the winner.

We've had some strange runs vs arsenal.
90s arsenal beat us for the most part and were a better side for the most part.
00s the opposite, we beat you guys for the most part.
But the 10s were some of the worst arsenal sides of my lifetime and yet we'd consistently lose to you.

I remember morata missing about 4 one on ones in a cup game up there a few years back.

Here’s the thing in 2023 for Arsenal, if our only achievement was winning the FA Cup & coming 6th in the Premier League would we regard that as a successful season?

I think the vast majority of Arsenal supporters would say no & that sums it up really.

The FA Cup is great if you are not in Europe but otherwise it’s a lot of extra matches fatiguing your players which you usually end up not winning anyway. The League Cup is even worse.

Arteta will go strong of course but it’s another mistake that we are likely to pay for down the line…

Why wouldn't he go strong? Week since last game then 2 weeks til the next. Would be ridiculous to rest players before a 2 weeks break.

I think it's ridiculous for either team to not go full strength.
Neither team have congested schedules at the moment. I agree there's too many games a year but these are professional athletes ffs.

DJ I went to the 87 final...was working on the car parks so got in free & picked up some sneaky tips too

I think the Wimbledon final was the first one I missed since 1971 - was in a shooting comp at Bisley range that day

Have awful memories of the 94 final where we got butt kicked by Utd 4-0

Doesn't have the same fell as it used to though...unless you're in it
