I think that applies to most technical directors. Emanalo wasn't popular before he signed anyone as I recollect.

A mate of mine (he's not Chelsea) works at Cobham and knew him well enough for Emanalo to mail him when he left the club. He let me read his mail, the things going on then from the fanbase was ridiculous, even leading to his family having to be escorted at times for their safety.

Anyhow, good luck Landon.

Popularity? i

It is a fickle , enjoyed by some, never achieved by others.

Football fans ? well we know how that goes.

But more importantly, I think that over his tenure at the club we did sign more poor players than Good.

Why did this happen ? I got turned off him due to the wraft of signings when he first got involved, i think that window when we signed Sidewell, and the others, it seemed a great let down at the time.

I think he is credited with signing several players who i think were actually AVB's influence.

But Roman kept him in place for nearly a decade, so he must have formed a solid relationship with Roman, which aided Roman and the sporting direction of the club in that period.

Agreed all the best to the lad

Yeah, son been training with first-team recently.

As for Michael Emenalo...convienent scapegoat for anything and everything, mostly things beyond his remit.
I have a few (non-footballing) ideas why...

I dont about that Mf, you can find a conspiracy round every corner if you look for it.

But what about the reality the signings over his tenure?

But memories can be selective, kdb, salah, courteous, kante, mata are just some if the credit he is given for signings, plus many other things.

Well you say that, but most of those signing came in with AVB, which was my point.

KDB, sold for peanuts

Courtois, never wanted to be at Cfc

Salah, sold for peanuts

Kante

Mata

I think he clearly worked well with Roman,

But we did sign a lot of duds over his tenure.

Of course you can also ignore all the other stuff he is credited fie in the article if you choose to.

Didn't like him originally because of it's blatant nepotism. Having him go from chief scout, to assistant manager, to director of football? Him being a long term associate of Avram Grant (the biggest suck up in football). It smelt off.

But all in all he wound up doing a decent job. I think Marina was better, got excellent fees for our sales which Emenalo always struggled with, but his contact book was impressive.

JF, i have not done that at all in fact, i did clearly state the following.

I think he is credited with signing several players who i think were actually AVB's influence.

But Roman kept him in place for nearly a decade, so he must have formed a solid relationship with Roman, which aided Roman and the sporting direction of the club in that period.

So my point is he was involved in various roles linked to player acquisition , sporting director and so on over a 10 year period of significant success, he clearly worked well with Roman and was not keen on Jose the second time around. Not a bad judgment call in hindsight.

But if we go over the squad signings over that period we did sign numerous poor players, along side some of the excellent players we have had at the club, something he played a role in.

I would hazard a guess that over 50% of the players we signed throughout Romans tenure were poor buys.

But hey taking risks on footballers is exactly that. It is not an easy science to master.

Something Tod and his chums are currently finding out

I never said you have though that aside and another observation is that some, maybe you, maybe not, claim the manager makes tge transfer calls, others the owners, others the techinal directors, etc.

My belief is that there is no single person responsible for signings. It tends to be a team of people and their decisions are dependant on many factors.

Agreed, but he held numerous well paid positions all related the technical/ sporting director roles, he was not in brand marketing was he now.

I actually feel that he was more than likely Romans eyes and ears essentially.
