Couldn’t think of anything else to be honest.

For me the game is well over. We’ve a real title race on and I’m enjoying it

Merr twists and turns than a twisty turny thing

Didn’t that part of the stadium get closed for several games? That seems like a strong statement.

“ Banners displayed in a section of Celtic Park prior to Saturday’s game do not represent the views of Celtic Football Club, and we disassociate ourselves from them. We condemn the display of such messages at Celtic Park”

Let’s not be naive about where the pressure is coming from. It is quite clearly pressure from agitators in his homeland who don’t like one of their best players playing for a club that they perceive support Palestine. This is purely down to how hard line Israelis perceive Celtic.

As mentioned by others, the player has received rapturous receptions when he has played since then.

They were welcomed back pretty soon after though were they not? Along with the pre planned rendition of Grace in the spirit of support for Palestine.

But I appreciate its a touchy subject so don't want to get embroiled in an argument about it. Reality is the player clearly doesn't feel welcomed and has had to leave the club as a result which is a sad situation and easily avoidable.

posted on 4/3/24

I genuinely don’t thing this was “easily avoidable”.

It was a foregone conclusion as far as I can see and his agent came over to insist on a move away. Then there’s the understandable pressure from his homeland.

Our morons managed to get a special mention in national news and broadsheets, it was that noticed.

It was easily avoidable. The minute Celtic banned them it was avoided.

From what I've seen there's only one club in the UK where their "ultras" group have been able to hold what might be perceived as pro Palestine demonstrations in their stadium at each home game. There have been loads of complicated political and social situations over the years but I can't remember many players having to leave their club as a result.

‘ That's him supporting his player though, that's not the same as the club denouncing those who made his position at the club untenable. In all honesty as well I didn't see Rodgers condemn the support for it even if he spoke about having sympathy for the player.

I actually thought Rodgers was pretty weak on it tbh. Spoke a lot about it being a complicated situation and having sympathy for him. I didn't ever see him calling on the support to cut it out.

Put it this way, if a Rangers catholic player felt he couldn't play for the club because of songs and actions from the stands that made him feel unwelcome I'd fully expect Clement and the club to have a strong statement on it rather than saying it was complicated and he had sympathy for the player's situation.’

Abada got nothing but support from the crowd at the games. Every time he came on the park, he was loudly applauded and fans sang for him. There was no pro-Palestinian chanting or anti-Israel songs at any of the games I was at or heard, so I’m not sure what you’re alluding to or think was happening. The Palestinian flags have been present amongst the fans for years, so it’s clearly not the problem with Abada. He ran numerous times to celebrate goals in front of the GB when those flags have been flown. It’s obviously something more recent, and if you’re being logical, something else that’s causing the issue.

What’s not being spoken about is that there seems to be more pressure from people back in Israel about who he’s playing for, and that seems to be more what the issue is. But that wouldn’t suit an argument…

As for what rangers fans and the club do-I can’t believe you’re being serious here. Your kitman openly hated catholics-that’s from stories from the players-and your fans STILL sing anti Catholic songs. You’re the only club in the U.K. to have had a stand closed by UEFA for racism.

The fact that you’ve had catholics play for you considering the behaviour of your fans is pretty astonishing.

It’s some take that rangers fans have on this situation.

‘ Brendan Rodgers admits that it has been ‘challenging’ for Liel Abada to produce his best form on the pitch against the backdrop of the conflict in Gaza, with the Celtic manager trying to support the Israeli and focus his mind on his football.

Abada has come under pressure from his homeland to quit Celtic due to the support that sections of their support have shown for Palestine, and Rodgers says that the situation has been difficult for the 22-year-old.

The winger received a rapturous reception from the Celtic fans upon his return to action from long-term injury in late December, but his body language and his refusal to acknowledge the support has drawn criticism from some quarters, with Abada disappearing straight up the tunnel after the midweek win at Easter Road.

But his manager hopes that with his backing and the support of his teammates, he will soon be back to somewhere near his best.

“I think what we do is just continue to communicate with him,” Rodgers said.

“My job is to maximise the potential that he has and for that, it’s just about making sure he is in the best place possible.

“There’s no doubt it’s been a challenge for him with everything that has gone on off the pitch. He’s well supported, he’s well loved here, but there’s no doubt it’s been a challenge for him.

“To play football at your best, you have to be in that really positive mindset and in a good headspace, but we will constantly work with him in order to maximise what we can get out of him.

“I speak a lot to him and he has great support around here, so yeah, it’s not easy, but we just keep working with him to get the best performance out of him.”

Very few of the media have commented about the comments from his homeland, but there’s one.

I understand its an emotional situation but logically none of that makes sense. You can't tell me that he's able to just put to the back of his mind that just hours after his country suffered its worst atrocity in living memory a fairly important section of the stadium went to a match and showed their support for Palestine. You cannot tell me that the fact his name was sung in any way shape or form allows him to move on from that or seeing the flags and hearing the songs in support in the weeks and months after.

And for all your comments on Rangers there, not once has a player of any colour or creed been unable to play for us as a result. When you mention some of the unacceptable parts of our support its worth using that for context to just how horrendous this must be for Abada to the point where he can't play.

I understand football fans will always be guilty of cognitive dissonance including myself. It's a touchy subject so its not something I really want to get embroiled in an argument about.

The fact is the player has gone and everyone knows why. Everything in between you can interpret how you wish.

Israels occupation has been barbaric, its disgusting what the world turns a blind eye to.

That said, abadas perception is very different i imagine, he will see it as defending themselves.

He will be getting it tight from back home i expect. Its not a relationship which can continue so its best he leaves, for his own sanity.

posted on 4/3/24

That’s the point-not one player has ever left because of fans or the club-but you’re assuming that Abada is.

You’re the one that said he hasn’t been supported, and now you’re acknowledging that actually he has been. He’s seen those Palestinian flags every game-home and away-since he signed. You’re now interpreting that he’s decided it’s now an issue.

Logically, he knew what he was signing for. He said he spoke to Bitton, who would absolutely have marked his card about the support.

All this was known before he signed and in every game he played. The only thing that’s changed is pressure from back home.

He personally has been supported by the club, the players, the manager and the fans. He’s not been supported by people back home. His decision to leave isn’t Celtic’s fault-it’s because he’s been put in an unenviable position by his own compatriots.

I can tell from your posts this is something you feel quite passionate and a bit emotional about so I can respect that. I'm far from a subject matter expert in it and don't want to provoke any sensitive feelings so I'll leave it at that.

Ultimately as JFK says the best outcome has been reached for all involved.

Quite clearly not everyone knows why, although it seems pretty clear that pressure from people in Israel about one of their best players playing for a club they perceive to be pro-Palestine (which is NOT the same as anti-Semitic or anti Israeli) was what has caused him to leave. 👍
