An interesting read.

He has certainly been better since AFCON. Some still some way to go, but a settled defence/team ahead of him will always help. We just seem to get to so many injuries that we never have a settled team.

I am not at all convinced that he is the answer, but will give him more time.

It’s a theme at utd, players with big reputation and come and fail. Same at Chelsea

Some players come to United and fail. Some come to United and after a rocky start turn it around. I guess the most basic point of my OP is that I wouldn't make up my mind to quickly which category Onana is in. It can only help his chances if the new sporting leadership builds a better side in front of him and a more positive culture around the club as a whole.

I read that this morning. Good piece.

I do like Onana. I think he does have the personality to succeed. Let's hope he continues his steady improvement.

It'd be good next season if he could play behind a settled defence and/or when squad players come in they're of a similar profile that at least means there's a consistency of style in front of him.

Proud to count myself an Onanist.

I encourage your Onanism. Go out and spread it!

There are quite a few posters on here who hate the manager, hate the players, hate the club structure... Yet always seem surprised when something goes wrong... Be it a bad result, an established player losing form or, in the case of Onana, not instantly landing on his feet and providing an unbreakable wall for the likes of Maguire and Lindelof.

Maguire may not be great, but I wouldn't put him as low as Lindelof

He’s a big upgrade on De Gea as an all round keeper, and has been upgrade there as a shot stopper given De Gea’s decline in that area. Though one thing he isn’t capable of that De Gea had was his ability for the spectacular and also how bloody good he was at saving with his feet. I reckon De Gea saves Foden’s second goal was his feet and it doesn’t go back into the danger area, other keepers may have saved it and pushed it back towards the onrushing City player.

"he speaks five languages and is in the process of acquiring English"

I'm sure I've heard him interview in English, even before his move to Utd?

I should have been more precise. It says he is "fluent in Spanish, French, Italian, and Ewondo, a regional language from Cameroon. His English is improving."

He's gone through spells of looking decent punctuated by big gaffs. There's a narrative that he's been good since AFCON, but actually he was having a good few weeks prior to AFCON as well (and seems to have kicked on a bit more since).

Long may it continue!

I like him and I think he's really improved in recent weeks. Seems to be mentally strong and up for the fight which is key. Will be even better once he has players ahead of him who he's comfortable passing to.

One thing that annoys me a little is his unorthodox style and when he's got his arm stretched out to palm a shot he pretty much somehow always manages to palm it back into the danger area rather than away from it. Don't think I've seen another keeper do it so often as him.

He only makes saves that come at him at a good height. Can't get down low quickly, and is completely hopeless when the shots are directed at the corners. Stands completely still and watches goals fly in most of the time. Hopeless keeper.

You really want a keeper to makes a save for Fodens second though, don’t you?

I quite like Onana, in particular his mentality. Hopefully we can implement a style of play that suits him best in the next 24 months.

Onana was never the issue. Completely understandable he needed time to settle. He'll be even better next season.

And yet the stats tell us he has been slightly above PL average in terms of shot stopping impact this season.

He was a quality keeper, a hundred times better than Onana will ever be.

Was is the operative word. He was awful last season and has the worst distribution of any top level goal keeper.

Probably. But when you test any keeper with as many shots as United are permitting, they will make mistakes more often. If a keeper makes a costly mistake every 100 shots he faces, the same keeper that looks like a liability behind United's defence would look pretty solid behind City's.

Alisson rightly has a reputation as an outstanding all-round keeper, but he definitely benefits from playing in a team which exercises a lot of control; put him in a pressurised situation like the recent game at the Emirates and usually well hidden imperfections emerge.

Was because sadly he's gone, not because he's not still better than Onana.
