Is Southgate underrated?

What he excels at is better suited to international management than club management

Don’t know if this point has been made in favour of Southgate yet or not but it is cup football we’re talking about so anything can happen.

He’s been consistent and perhaps on paper we could have or should have done better but again, that’s cup football.

I’d wager that if there were an international league we would be a ‘top 4’ team and occasionally win the league.

I'm all for Southgate being United manager.

His first signing will probably be Kelvin Phillips for £80m.

He's not on Guardiola or Klopp's level of course, but I think he could do a good job for a team in 4th-6th which is exactly where united are right now.
======
Have to agree with this part.

But why would Utd want a manager suited to 4-6th place when all they want is improvement? seems a tad nonsensical if he was appointed don't you think?

England have 50 or 60 players for him to cherry pick from.

he was a failure at club level haivng spent big so his club career is comparible to lampard or gerrard, maybe even less so.

He was given an opportunity by england after nobody else would touch him for 4 years and he had 3 years with u21 and got to one finals but did nothing there at all and learned his esson by losing the the groups.

He was given the england job after saying he didn't want it and had a huge amount of players form 2016. his tenure is the usual hammer the msall sides stuff then just go ultra negative and get through tournament.

Look what he had at his disposal!

A grinder. theres literally nothing impressive baout this record. Nothing.

He's managed to get relegated inthe nations league so that blows the league theory to dust.

He's had some interesting draws in the international tournaments but it can be best summed up by saying once england met a proper side they were out.

He had in effect ahome tournament with every advantage going, ukraine, denmark? a really bad german side? They shoudl have beaten italy but got done at wembley so it eneded in failure.

If any of the top european sides were given a home final it'd be an absolutely massive advantage.

What man utd would be doing even looking at him i don't know.

a perfectly nice manm with a perfectly nice waistcoat. but MAN UTD manager? my god. please make it happen!

Doesn't seem to be a popular choice other than fans of other cubs wanting him appointed for "bantz" reasons?

Of course he could be great but I feel that unlikely, what I do however have even less idea of who should it actually be? I don't even have a fav pic in my own head, IF ETH goes and that's not certain I honestly couldn't pick a fav?

Not very well at that. The dips have probably been in those lower places just as often as us in the last decade or so.

I remember Keano applying the reducer on him back in his playing days, wish he crunched him a little more ! 😂

I think that in the last ten years you've finished above us 5 times and we have finished above you 5 times, if memory serves...

If you add this year then 5-6 to you and if you add the 2012/2013 season as VC said decade or so then it's back to 6-6

It's much closer than it feels, that's for sure.

That's not what Viddy said though.

These stats are technically correct but you know what they say about stats. Damned lies.

We won every trophy available including league and CL since the last time United won a trophy before your cup win last season, which we've already cancelled out this season. Been hitting 90 points in the league, lost out twice to City by a point and lost two CL finals to Madrid etc. United have failed to qualify for CL more times than they have, or evens. They've never challenged for the league either.

It's definitely nowhere near close. If this is how Liverpool fans used to reason when we were sheet then I can see why they used to call us deluded. Because that's what this is tbh.

Never mind. If I have to explain it to you then you're too thick to hold a conversation with and I can't waste my time explaining things that would be understood in nursery school.

Never mind. If I have to explain it to you

…..

You don’t have to explain anything to me. The facts, which I know you have just run off to check say it all for themselves.

Have another go. Try and think this time.

Well if you want to stick strictly to what VC said then I don’t get why you’ve listed all the other stuff.

No-one would argue that what Liverpool have achieved over the last decade is close to United. But league positions, you’re free to add them up and take an average if you want, can’t say I’m invested enough.

But I was right in that it’s closer than it feels. You’ve had some quite low league finishes also when we have finished 2nd or 3rd say.

I like how the original poster proves his own point in his original post - Southgate is hugely underrated, even by those who say he is underrated it seems.

He's better than Mourinho in my opinion.
