and although they aint necessarily to my taste that band Polyphia are extremely talented musicians.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
In this vein, I'd add Plini, who has been amongst the best prog guitarists (technically-speaking) and songwriters of the last decade-and-a-half or so.

And Tosin Abasi of Animals Are Leaders.

yeah youtube is littered with guitairsts like Tosin, hence what I meant by a lot of the most modern gifted musicians now go solo on a platform like Youtube.

Also Nuno Bettencourt spending so many years as Rhianna's tour guitarist is such a waste. Thankfully Extreme came back and Nuno broke the internet with his solo on Rise.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My reaction upon hearing Rise:

'oh that's cool, Nuno is doing a solo using that dotted delay trick again.....wait, he's not using a delay?!??!'

The guy is incredible and has been underrated for about 30 or 40 years now.

fun fact, I toured with Tosin when he was in his first metal band probably about 20 years ago now. He was ridiculous even then. He taught me a cool sweep picking part (which to this day I still can't play properly) and asked me to teach him a part of one of my bands songs he really liked.

So what I'm saying is, I gave Tosin a guitar lesson. You're all welcome.

I've nothing at all against Taylor Swift but the songs are often incredibly bland. It's staggering that she's been so successful.

Oh man sweep picking, would love to be able to do that. But then I own Strats, Teles and Les Pauls so not exactly the right guitars to do it

Yes good luck to her and everything but it really is a mystery to me too!

Although I’m sure I’m not her target audience!

Lana Del Rey has to be worthy of a mention. Fabulous voice and songwriting. Maybe Hozier deserves a shout as well.

I find Ed Sheeran uber bland too! His best song was produced by Pharell/Neptunes and sounds like Justin Timberlake, but apart from that!

About half a billion teenage girls think that she's their personal best friend and that she writes songs about them or that could be about them. That's all it is.
And she's an OK singer, and she works with an incredible marketing team and a concert team that takes concert sets to a new level.

I have one of Nuno's, Washburn N2, was given it when my uncle passed away. So easy to play, granted I did get my buddy to lower the action its such a quick guitar.

My mate keeps on buying the new Ernie Balls he has 4 now, and they are a fricking joy to play.

I'm not that great at it to be honest but can muddle through. Doesn't have to be done on a 'shred' guitar though, my favourite guitar to play on is my strat!

Just find a basic pattern across four strings at first, and and start practising it slowly to a click. Gradually increase the speed and make sure you keep your picking motion smooth, it'll get there!

In fairness, he's a highly skilled song writer, and singer/guitarist.
And the competition isn't exactly mind blowing.

Sean Paul

Haven't seen anyone going in this direction, so thought I'd throw some of these in there for variety's sake.
