He thrives against teams that leave space for him to run into so that he can miss.

Did he do his job though? This is based on the player we had at Chelsea & I didn't see enough Spurs games, but my issue with it was his primary benefit was his pace pushing defensive lines back, but the entire point of Ange's football is designed to do that anyway? Obviously his pressing fit the style, but was that really worth it?

On the surface what you ideally want is a striker who's happy dropping deep to pull defenders out, not Werner's game at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His direct running combined with pace scares the life out of the oppo even if camped in. At home to Forest we were up against a low block and he was the best player on the pitch, creating our first (it was an own goal) by just running at defenders and causing panic.

It’s debatable whether we should sign him long term, on the one hand he is very cheap, on the other we can def do better.

But as a loan signing, yes he did his job definitely. Compare to Phillips who West Ham paid a £5m loan fee for - we got a motivated player that contributed his fair share.

I think we did okay for the loan deal
----------------------------------------------------------------
Did you lot play him more upfront or on the wing? Cos either his close dribbling has improved, or you played him a little deeper to give him some type of space to run into.

That's Werner's whole thing, space. He's a flawed player but give him space & he's not totally useless (at times is even an asset), deny it from him & he has no impact on games at all.

We played him wide left. He was of course very dangerous when other sides were chasing the game and leaving gaps. However, he also created issues for sides playing a low block by just running at them.

For a loan he really wasn’t that bad. We loaned Danjuma last time round and he was shiete, the guy hasn’t even been able to hold a position down at Everton this season. Werner outdid him m, no questions

Ok I can see that. He used to do that for us too, drift to the left channel & run inside with the ball but it rarely reaped a reward. He can roast people for pace but not 1v1, if the defender had a good starting position he's too easy to cut off.

Just think I'd be wondering even if he did OK why didn't we just bring in a different profile of attacker who'd create more gaps? You only missed 4th by 2 points, might've made a difference to that? But any who.

We scored 74 goals, scoring was not our issue. 61 goals conceded was, that was the difference.

Werner did his job and proved a valuable loan - not sure why this hurts you so much. I get he was shiete for you lot but he did what was expected at Spurs.

Not hurt, just curious. He's a weird one for us. Overall he was quite sh!t, but I can't honestly say we wouldn't have won the Champions League without him either, bonkers as that sounds

That threat in behind he posed, despite never being confident he'd actually score, kept popping up time & time again. It dropped opposition lines just enough to still be a threat on the break but also gave us room to play a bit ourselves.

He turns defenders and they faaacking hate that. The truth is when you have pace like he does it can elevate you from a technically mediocre player to above average at pro level as it scares the bejeezus out of defenders when you run at them - Adama traore is another one, he would be a Championship player without his pace yet has had a career in the top flight and even played for Spain and Barcelona

Will be funny if United win the FA cup and qualify for the Europa, pushing Chelsea into the Farmers conference autoglass shield
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i'd actually welcome this.
Could be the first team to win the cl, uefa, cwc and conference

Same. I'm over Europa, recently fallen into it twice & won it both times, it's hurdled.

Probably childhood memories, but I always had a soft spot for the old Cup Winners Cup & the Conference League is basically it's grandchild.

tbf the cup winners cup was imo the 2nd tier tourny after the cl/european cup, and then uefa.
