I liked All or Nothing.

Whether or not players were quiet due to the cameras, it did show what a quiet, ‘stay in line’ type of team Poch had assembled.

shti 2nd half

Would have taken a point before KO. So can’t complain really. 4 from 6 against City and Chelsea. Best Arsenal and that’s a great return of points

Yeah agree. Was just so disappointed with that 2nd half performance though.

Not being funny, but that list of 100 songs I've done is almost certainly the best list of 100 songs ever made.

I read a news item the other day, about how statues of Churchill, Nelson and Drake might be removed throughout Wales.

One of the reasons give was that they were advocates of the British Empire.

I couldn't believe what I was reading.

When I was in Greece this summer I visited a WW2 war memorial which contained graves of soldiers who died fighting in the war in the Agean. The gravestones were very moving.

One of the ones that stood out read, "Tell the Empire, all ye who pass this way, that we who died serving it rest content".

What would they think if they saw us today ? 2 generations of Brits. English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, who fought to the death for their lives, their friends' lives, and the Empire ?

Over a million men who died fighting for it in those 2 wars alone.

How can we commemorate the victims of those wars, when we condemn the very thing they were fighting for ?

i know the Empire wasn't perfect. noone was anywhere. they aren't today, but more so in the 18th and 19th century. the british tried to lead the way in moral values, but they weren't the same values we have today. They did some great things like putting an end to the atlantic slave trade, spreading medicine, shared language, medicine, education, but yes they got some things wrong.

But that doesn't mean we were evil. We simply weren't. We tried to be the good guys, even if at times we weren't all that good.

But moroever, it's who we were. the Empire was US. It's like Harry Kane going round saying "down with the Kanes, down with the Kanes", because he found out his great grandma did something that by today's values would be judged unacceptable.

The negative way in which we talk abut Empire, as if it's something shameful, is total and utter madness. Our ancestor lived for it, fought for it, believed in it, and died for it. And we talk about it like it's the root of all wrong. It's absolutely disgusting. It's US who's shameful, not them.

and 20th century. half asleep.

I don't really think there's many that believe the empire of the 'root of all wrong' as you put it. Like you say there were many benefits to the countries we invaded. But we did invade. It was justified at the time by a widely held belief that these people were lesser, an idea that we reject as a society now - and rightly so.

To glorify the empire in modern Britain is troubling. 'We' rejected the European Union at least in part on a platform of protecting our identity and sovereignty. I think only the most obstinate and blindly nationalistic of us could claim to want out of the EU while extolling the virtues of an empire that spanned the globe. And even the most ardent remainer should be able to accept the value of national identity and culture.

In terms of my own personal feelings I consider myself fortunate to be British. I find the concept of being proud of the nation's past slightly bizarre. Like if Kane was proud of Jimmy Greaves' goal record, it'd be weird. I think an adult way to approach it is to understand what happened, and respect the magnitude of what they achieved, while accepting that much of it is wrong in a modern context. We've grown, and that's ok. They weren't necessarily bad people that thought it was our right to invade and enslave, but they were wrong. Much like racism on old TV isn't ok. It's just sad that people used to laugh at that stuff.

Interesting points on the vaccine by the way lads, and well noted. Like I say - I'm not anti vax or anything crazy I think the idea that you have to get it to travel was triggering for me though. Fortunately I'm not at risk at all so I won't be in the first wave of getting it. And honestly, I trust the government here more than Boris and co to not fack it up.

GET THAT VACCINE IN ME NOW.

I’ll take all 3/4 different ones at once.

You know the government didn’t make the vaccine?? although I agree the roll out could br another omnishsbles!

Not sure what level of risk I am but am over 50 & BAME so I’m hoping somewhere near the top.

Yeah I get that thanks Sizzle

You know there's going to be some fack up along the line. Hopefully not obvs. Just the whole stress and rush to get it all done doesn't sit right with me. Like wait 6 months until you're definitely sure? I heard there's like 7 different vaccines lined up.. which is best? Which stops working after a while and which has the side effects? I'll happily wait until everything sorted and it's just a normal day for all involved.

Isn't there a bunch of strains going round as well? Will one vaccine get them all? I'll happily admit I've stopped following the science so it's a genuine question

Well surely they can update it like they do the flu vaccine every year?

posted on 30/11/20

Yeah I just had a read, it seems like it's probably going to get all of the strains for now as it's mutating slower than a flu virus. The idea of immunity wearing off is a very real concern though. Do we want to have everyone getting a vaccine every few months? Seems horrendously inefficient. But I guess if that's the best we can do that's it..

I think it’s two for now. You get one, and then another a few weeks later, I think that’s it for now.

posted on 30/11/20

Yeah that's so it works. But they're not sure how long it'll work for. People are getting reinfected not because of different strains but because the antibodies only last in your body for so long. So yeah, it's totally possible you'll have to get boosters every few months.

posted on 30/11/20

Thing is, they're not sure. I'm not saying that as a conspiracy or anything, there's no way they can be sure if reinfection rates, long term vaccination efficacy etc and I guess we have to risk it as the alternative is shutting everything down continually.

Fack man. Remember when the worst thing to happen was us missing out on the CL and X Factor winners getting Christmas number 1?

No vaccine is 100% but they are saying 90% effectiveness. Not sure what’s going to happen, the Christmas period should be interesting!
