If it’s your kind of thing I’d read this book:

Football Hackers: The Science and Art of a Data Revolution

It’s pretty interesting and enlightening

I'll check it out

Dominoes for me, just round the corner and their constant texts have got to me.

No other pizza place round here, was an epic place that closed down years ago

Yeah for sure stats have a big impact already. I'm just saying management isn't a science yet. IMO anyway. Maybe Klopp got closest with it but I bet losing at home to Burnley wasn't rating very highly in their models.

Obviously just following the stats doesn't always get the result you expect, but neither will just shouting at them to run around. I expect the next generation of managers will get a lot more consistency over a longer period than we're seeing right now.

Aces lose to Kings 2 in 10. Unlikely result doesnt mean never but you should still get all your money in with aces
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah course. Thing is, like poker, the psychology can have a huge impact on the result. Top players don't get better cards than others but they win a lot more often.

Like what are the chances of a keeper making a mistake leading to a goal after getting caught drunk driving vs his wife cheating on him?

That's where I'm saying there's still work to do. Understanding the human side as well as the stats. I'm sure some managers are very good at it, but I think there's a lot of potential for improvement in that area.

Tilt has undone top players yeah

My angle doesnt disagree with you btw

Even if you play the game perfectly as the stats tell you to there is a sizeable chance of losing remaining. This widens if the problems you talk about aren’t addressed. From the statistical perspective its more about minimising losses than anything

I cant imagine football will be 'solved' in anyway by human analysts

posted on 22/1/21

Agreed Blarmy. There's way too many variables. I reckon they can get a lot closer than they are currently, though.

Pins and needles or hiccups?

I've always hated getting hiccups.

The way poker is right now btw machines are a lot better at the game than humans

So humans run the solvers and try and learn what they can to use in the games

What this implies is even though games can be solved, to an extent, it will remain beyond full human comprehension

I can definitely see a point where computers are simulating the best way to play football in theory

But humans wouldnt be able to replicate it irl

Well yeah. You can never account 100% for free will.

I think the top players could make a very good attempt at playing perfect football. The opposition won't be perfect, though.

“ The best football we’ve played all season so far and there’s 2 reasons for it. The experienced midfield 3 are controlling the game and Jack Clarke is the 2nd coming of Messi“
