US is terribly terrible for drink driving
I thought today was alright
Dont take this the wrong way - cause ive said before I have issue with Alonso and the 'justice' he faced
But is there a moral difference between him and Merson who got drunk enough to pass out driving and crashed into a lorry on a motorway?
I won’t ever take something like that the wrong way
It’s a good question - in essence they are the same but the outcome does unfortunately differentiate the situation
The actual differences are - Alonso had passengers and was speeding
But Merson was more intoxicated and if you are passing out on the motorway its just pure luck that no one gets badly hurt or worse
I think had Alonso done just time I wouldn’t begrudge him a playing career after (which obvs wouldn’t have happened)

Legally yes, morally im not sure
Merson's is more tolerated because it came with a pattern of alcohol abuse and addiction too
No one hates Gazza or Best either for being drunk drivers. They sympathise with their issues moreso
I think so morally, I’m sure you’ve once in your life gone stupidly over the speed limit (think the highest I ever hit was 100mph in the USA).
However killing a passenger going at 90 is morally worse in my opinion.
I think Gazza gets a lot of apologists somewhat disappointingly.
Lee Hughes didnt have passengers, he would be the same level as Merson then
My cousin got into a crash going a little bit over the speed limit with his 2 year old son in the back. No one got hurt but I dont think he's ever forgiven himself for the incident
Personally I think outcome plays a factor morally
I really dont understand your thinking there as there is no control over the outcome from the perpetrator
They all got behind a wheel while too drunk to drive, where was the moral choice that affects the outcome that separates them?
Form a societal perspective i can see that justice has to be done for the victims. But from the individual perspective of the criminal i dont see a moral difference in cases here
I’m not sure I can argue my stance well at all tbf as it isn’t logical but I just think outcome plays such a huge factor in the morales of certain situations
Maybe it’s because in my mind outcome changes the risk profile of the situation
A lot of out come bias after today’s game as well
It's about nuance isn't it? Obviously anyone getting behind the wheel drunk is in the wrong, but each case is different. Alonso was doing 70 in a 30 limit in the rain with a car full of people. I definitely think that's worse than going out on your own and crashing on a motorway.
I mean, drunk or not 70 in a 30 is facking outrageous.
I actually view the motorway as the more dangerous place to be drunk driving but i see that point on the speed
I used to know someone that got banned for doing over 100 in a 30. Moaned about the ban, too. He was lucky he didn't kill someone. Caant
Its an unfortunate part of the Alonso one as well that the victim wasnt wearing a seat belt

Maybe? Again, it's situation dependent. At night after the pin when it's likely quiet you're more likely to kill yourself. In town there's pedestrians and walls to hit..
