He is a shocking defender and I said it from day one. Just a typical boy's club signing by his old mate ETH. I'd get rid of him in the summer as he's simply not good enough at the top level. What CB has been f*cked off by Juve, Bayern and was actually any good??
Martinez has been crap as well. Is he off the hook now?

I don’t rate him but he’s at least had a decent amount of time where he was good and I long for that return to form. De Ligt is just bang average
I didn't think he was awful. Obviously, got sat down for the goal, but I think more credit to Gakpo than a terrible mistake on De Ligt's part, and the whole thing was unlocked by a glorious through ball.
The other thing I'd say is that both De Ligt and Maguire are better suited to the central CB spot. Neither have blistering pace, and the wide CB roles ideally involve eating up a lot ground. Amorim is obviously managing everyone's minutes, and in Yoro's case easing him into the team, into English football and back from injury. If his trajectory continues, he'll clearly be the first choice RCB. In the meantime, I'd say both De Ligt and Maguire have been good this season overall. In yesterday's line up one of them had to play in the role they are both better suited to, the other in a role neither are that well suited to. Put Maguire at RCB / De Ligt CCB and Maguire would have been the one who looked most stretched.
Are you arguing that the penalty was awful too? To me that was just really unlucky.
Anything else he did badly in the game that I'm forgetting?
I think he's generally been solid and we're now pretty well stocked at CB too for the next few years.
De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez and Yoro as out and out CBs and we also have Mazraoui and Dalot (yes, him!) as players who I think could play the wider CB roles.
I'm not forgetting Evans and Lindelof for the season either.
“sweet Jesus De Ligt was awful”
No, no he wasn’t. Not even close to awful.
Surprised he’s done so poorly tbh, thought he was a good signing.
Sent to the shops by Gakpo and the handball was amateur. Deservedly hooked.

He really hasn’t done poorly, at all. Anyone who has watched all of our games will tell you that he’s been the best of our starting CBs so far this season (Mazraoui aside, if people want to count him).
Steady, consistent, decent in the air, pushes out well and very consistent in his passing. Doesn’t have very good acceleration, but he’ll settle as our CCB eventually I think.
I actually don't think he's been that bad. The 3 games he missed through illness we were considerably worse and none of those teams are as good as Liverpool and especially in their own stadium where they hardly ever drop pts.
Forest, Spurs, Bournemouth, Newcastle - That's 12 goals shipped against average to decent teams.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The handball was really unlucky, obviously. Of course it can be argued that his arm should be down by his side, but it happens. It’s incredibly hard to jump, pivot, stretch - all of these things that CBs have to do in their own box, all of the time - with your hands tucked down your shorts for 90 mins. It’s a mistake, but it’s a really unlucky one.
As to the Gakpo goal, he’s been skinned there, but he’s making a desperate recovery challenge, and been beaten by an outstanding piece of skill. GNev explained very clearly (and accurately) yesterday why Ugarte was more to blame for that one than De Ligt. If the defence is able to reset and step out, fine, go chasing the ball. Otherwise you sit in on the line and defend against the forwards.
I don't think De Ligt has been spectacular, but has basically delivered what I reckon he was bought to be: an experienced player at a good price who contributes strength in depth in our CB options. With him and (extended) Maguire in the squad, we're pretty well covered for CCB for the meantime and they give us options (though not an ideal fit) in the wider CB positions, where we probably need to focus our recruitment in the shorter term.
He was not awful. Gakpo is a good player and should be applauded for that piece of skill.
The Handball what can you do. The handball rule is utter madness in my opinion. Anyone that has played this game knows that at times you cannot make certain movements without just instinctively throwing your hands in the air.
Next players will be asked to put their hands inside their pockets!
I know he made a mistake for both goals.
Also that there's room for improvement e.g. his positioning sometimes.
But you couldn't fault his effort yesterday. And isn't that what most Utd fans wanted from each and every player??
Even on Gakpo's goal, he went sliding in because he was busting a gut to close him down and get a block in!!

He’s been average imo and I’ve watched maybe 8 Utd games this season. Forest have better cbs going on this seasons performances.
I felt he was deservedly hooked. Utterly sold himself by over committing Gakpo, particularly when you consider everyone knows that is exactly was Gakpo is going to do.
James Justin, who is a terrible defender, did the exact same thing last week… over committed himself and went to ground.
The handball was just daft.
I don’t know if you are watching other teams??? I do remember thinking Lucas was steady in midfield for us once upon a time.
I think De Ligt has generally been better than what we expected. Martinez hasn't been great all season, but hopefully improvement to come. Maguire seems pretty solid. Yoro is the one who 'could be anything', but needs time. But as a 4, it is fairly solid, and I hope it's a case that the sum of their parts is better than what they are individually, and honestly, that seems to be something Amorim is good at where he will improve them to work as a unit.

Tbf some of our players have already been doing that for most of the season.
I would add he didn't have a great game yesterday, but we seem obsessed with singling out individuals, rather than looking at the whole team performance and how we are progressing generally.
Dalot was better yesterday but still to convince, but the starting 11 was close to what we would start each game

I don’t know what to tell you other than read and ask what other United fans who watch us every week are saying.
Nobody thought he was going to come in and be playing like VVD or even a pre-injury Martinez immediately, but again, he’s been more consistent than Martinez and Maguire this season, and is obviously a level up from Lindelof. He’s a very steady, experienced (particularly for his age - he’s younger than Konate, believe it or not) calming influence who is long term going to be what we need from our CCB in Amorim’s system: quick to step in and dominant in challenges, strong in the air, assured, confident and very good with the ball at his feet.
A very decent player for the price we got him for, and if he can stay fit, likely an important one for the future.
He generally played well yesterday. He does seem to have a few errors in him, though. Still not convinced by him.
Yeah he’s been okay, I’m not saying otherwise, but I thought he was poor yesterday and you could make a pretty good case for him costing you the three points.
He was also hooked because he was on a yellow most likely (something Amorim does with great frequency).
He’s also only just back from injury and left Anfield with ice strapped to his leg.
