I did mean in a footballing context, but I concede.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hello Barry, I am now setting you a challenge to find stats that do tell the whole story, but specific to the footballing context. Please have this to me by 1530 and prioritise this over preparing for your 1600 meeting, please"
Fair enough. I shall have a look.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probs pen converison %. Tells you if they are good at penalties or not.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't make me kill myself. Whenever a player takes a low penalty not in the corner, but the keeper goes the other way the commentators call it a great penalty. However, if the keeper dives the correct way by 50/50 chance, then the commentators call it a terrible penalty. It is the exact same penalty (providing they don't do the cheat hop run up). It should be given an identical rating in terms of penalty quality. The only difference is which way the keeper goes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I did clarify with min 5 attempts, but don't really agree with what you are saying.
Have you never heard commentators say it's a good pen, when it's at an easy height for the keeper, not in the corner, but the keeper goes the other way?
It's not really stats related though. Just an observation
Another favourite one is "that's why zonal marking doesn't work" when a team concedes a goal from the 11th corner, using zonal marking, after 10 successful shut outs from corners using zonal marking.
But then the other team concedes from their first two corners, using man to man marking. They never say "that's why man to man marking doesn't work".
Something different from the expected norm always gets highlighted when it is not actually statistically significant, in the context.
Like a crap female pundit for example, when there are countless crap male pundits. You don't get someone shouting at the TV "bloody male pundits are shiiite".
Etc.

One of the other worst ones is the playing out from the back argument, which really should have been dispelled a decade ago.
Also people getting outraged at what was/wasn't given for a 50/50 decision.
Ally McCoist: "I'll tell you what btw, there's contact on the player there. I can't BELIEVE the ref hasn't given that"
Eventually goes to VAR after Ally believing it wasn't being given. Ref looks at it a million times and gives it.
Ally McCoist: "I'll tell you what btw, that's what I'd put on the softer side. I can see what people are saying about there being contact, but it's a contact sport. Very harsh for me"
Although McCoist usually sticks to his original viewpoint even when proven to be incorrect in replays. So ignore this example. Just read the comments in a different accent from his and that will be fine.
In that case, the actual worst is when people (almost always biased fans) believe there is a conspiracy against their club with referees. Worst thing is most these people are (supposedly) adults.
As a personal annoyance, when someone says something pretty plausible in football, or the wider context, and says "you couldn't make it up"
Also a big one I have noticed people failing to put into context is saying that a team having more attempts/attacking more means they deserve to be level/winning when they are losing. Or have been the better team.
If the opposition score early with their first attempt, they don't necessarily then need to score another at that point. So the other team attacking and failing to score doesn't make them the better team. If they do score, then the opposition may come out and try and score again because that's when they need to score again.
Goals do indeed change games.
The team who does the best goal celebration should be awarded bonus points. On this basis i nominate Jesse Lingard for the Balon D'Or or is it Carte D'or i forget?
And one final one - people who get annoyed by stats.

You couldn't make it up
I've looked at all the stats for pens and if Harry Kane had never taken a pen in his 15 year career he'd have scored 18 goals which is a similar amount to Gabriel Magalhaes at Arsenal.
Was it Troy Deeney that came out with "People think that having more possession makes you the better team, but that's not always the case"? On MOTD at the weekend.
Some fantastic insight that. A real revelation.
The assist stat is great and tbh we should start taking the pre assist stat more seriously

Not necessarily overstated, but the issue is that the stat itself is so reliant on another player for the stat to actually exist that it’s not always that reflective of a player’s quality and contribution.
For example, Salah hasn’t been significantly more creative than Cole Palmer this season but has ten more assists because of the players he’s passing to.
The same was true for years of KDB and Bruno.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah there was a stat saying Palmer had created the most chances in the past 2/3 months but has zero assists. Also another stat on SkySports showing the big chances created stats with Salah 19 and Palmer 18, yet Palmer has 6 assists and Salah 15.

The issue is with interpretation not observing what's happening. Caring about 'big chances' is making the problem worse IMO. Not all chances in the same position are the same - is the ball bouncing, is it coming at them too fast or slightly behind them instead of into their stride?
If you don't care about assists that's fine but they are what they are.

Seems Salah is creating better chances than Cole Palmer. What were the xG stats on each of the chances created? Also what is the quickest and most pain free way to kill oneself?
