Sending off...100% correct decision.
Disallowed goal...there wasn't one. The referee deemed that the Villa forward had fouled the keeper he blew his whistle. At that point the play should stop and star again with a free kick to United. The fact that the Villa forward ignored the whistle and put the ball in the net does not make it a goal to disallow,
Penalty...again 100% correct decision.
General play....as good as we have seen for a while 5 or 6 nil would not be unkind to Villa.

Sending off was a comically straightforward decision. Hojlund beat Martinez to the ball, and the keeper changed direction to ensure he took him out (with significant force).

Disallowed goal: ref mistakenly thought Bayindir had both hands on the ball when the ball was nicked away from him. He blew for a foul before the goal was scored, so play had been (erroneously) stopped, which meant VAR couldn't intervene and point out his mistake.

Penalty: no question, Anad's clever movement resulted in a clear-cut foul (and a sore ankle).

More importantly, a really good performance from United, in which we dominated throughout against a good side that needed the win much more than we did. We dominated possession and territory, moved the ball quickly and created several excellent chances.

Thanks to you both for that. Excellent summaries. For some reason it's difficult to find the equivalent anywhere else.

Yes, it's a bit frustrating that the controversy over their disallowed goal has (inevitably, as it's United) taken the focus away from what was a very positive performance from us.

We were the better team for pretty much the entire game and should really have won by more.

102. Incredible. Hope she’s still in decent health.

There wasnt a disallowed goal. The ref wrongly blew for a foul on the GK, so he game stopped. Meanwhile, a Villa player booted the loose ball into the net. Technically he should have been booked for that.

I did think that myself but didn't want to be too harsh. You are not wrong tho'. Can you imagine Emery if that had happened.

Villa were chite from start to finish and deserved nothing fom the game. They actually made United look half decent..at Od Trafford. Martinez should have been sent off too for violent conduct. Not only did he body check Hojlund he head butted him too. Emery should have been given a Red also for sarcastically applauding the ref for awarding a penalty after his player stamped on Amads ankle.

I mean he should have been sent off for the violent conduct.... and not just for denying the goalscoring opportunity

They didnt say that on the BBC news BTW

Just checked on BBC iPlayer. They did say that, almost.

The reporter said that 'Villa were the unlucky losers at Manchester United'. But in the context that they were pipped for the CL spot by Chelsea, who won at Forest.

Not in France it isn’t. They lopped the head off their last queen.

They really don’t get the respect they deserve sometimes, the French.

I read that by the letter of the law the ref was right to give a foul to our keeper for Villa’s disallowed goal. Supposedly the keeper doesn’t have to have his hands on the ball, just ‘in control’ of it and to have touched it at some point which you could argue he was. It’s a stupid rule but that’s the rules.
