I think Martins comments were more aimed at Raskin than Dio.
Raskin doesnt fit into Martins system and needs sold. Im pretty sure it was Raskin that he was talking about with ego. ie dropping deep to collect the ball, holding onto the ball too long in possession etc.. reverting back to type and the self preservation that he was talking about.
Raskins strengths is prowl that mdifield, chase the ball and take the game to the midfield. in the 6 his use of the ball is too erratic for Martin. and in the 8 he isnt moving to instruction enough and trying to play his own game too much.
Raskin will be off imo and Aasgard will replace him. Wouldnt be surprised to see Cameron/Bajrami come in for Raskin tonight.

We will see, I do agree if a decent offer came in he's off.
That was worse a few weeks ago than it is now because we can see his role in the system is a waste of him.
Ultimately, i think we've chosen the wrong manager and this team playing more in the style Gerrard's team had would be so much better. Hope to be proved wrong but don't expect to be.

Martin will very quickly lose the fans if he doesn’t make changes. Can’t make comments like he did on Saturday without backing that up. His team selection has also cost us.
Putting Antman in for Dowell, Jefte to lb and Aarons to rb would solve a couple issues straight away by giving us a natural left footer and an outball.
Agree with what your saying on Raskin, think Cameron however will come in for one of Dio or Raskin. Again Martin could help things by simply switching Dio and Raskin.

He's been the most pash of any player, Aarons should be benched and fill in at RB when Tav isn't fit.

Aarons has done well in the one or two minutes he’s been on the right hand side, starting the Gassama goal against Pana.
But simply he’s a Martin signing and we saw the Motherwell goal come down Tavs side again. Add in countless other mistakes against Motherwell at weekend, the poor mentality called out and Martin has given himself a decision to make. He either makes a change now and suffers from it just as last couple managers have. He’s not the first to talk about attitude and mentality, coaches have paid the price but clearly the captain will have an influence as well and blame rightly falls with him.

Not for me, wouldn't even consider Aarons being the starting RB.
He's been the worst player every game he's played for us. That we would bin our captain and biggest goal threat off for a guy that's passed to the opposition more than his own team baffles me.
You can be frustrated with Tav but lets no suggest Aarons would be any better.
Part of me wouldn't mind seeing it because then the fans might get off Tav's back when they see how schite the alternative is, we've already seen it but now we want to see it at RB. Not that they would, he's the whipping boy when he's been our standout player for a decade. Madness.

Tavernier has been great for us. And criticism has been over top. Clearly however his performances have gone downhill. He’s makes countless mistakes and is a defensive liability. Was clear to see at weekend.
Even looking at the stats from weekends game backs up that Tav is useless defensively as a right back.
Aarons has been terrible, but that’s been on the wrong side. He at least has an excuse.
Then you have manager after manager calling out players for not working hard enough, having a poor attitude and mentality. And you think what, the captain gets off without any blame?

I dont watch a lot of Rangers, not enough to give an opinion on Tav defensively anyway but whenever I have seen him he seems like the kinda right hand sided player that could do well as a RWB? has he ever been used like that?

Also good chance that was Martin covering his own erse because his system isn't working (so far at least) for me most of the blame for the weekend is on the manager and he's the one hiding.
Two full backs who've struggled to defend recently, Tav has still been way better than Aarons in that respect and has though been much better at holding onto the ball, passing to his own team and attacking.
It's probably a moot point because he starts both.

If the team don't have the right attitude, that doesn't lie at the captain's door but the managers.

Thought this was pretty accurate:
After the Panathinkos tie, I was looking forward to the Motherwell game, especially as it was two new managers trying to implement their styles.
Unfortunately for Rangers and Russell Martin, the Motherwell side looked far more comfortable and were worth more than the 1-1 draw.
Martin alluded to players having to drop their ego and work harder, but that wasn't our only issue, especially in the second half.
There are several, let's call them teething problems, with the system. For example, Max Aarons has to come inside the pitch due to his lack of efficiency on his left foot. The midfield is far too open in transition, basically leaving the number six on their own when the two number eights are ahead of the ball.
In possession, Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande are playing as the number eights so far and they look lost at points. They are having to cut inside to use their stronger feet and when they are having to play high and wider, they have to cross the ball on their weaker foot. It's not working for either so far, thus making us ineffectual in the final third. It's a situation that needs addressing by the management team.
The attack is tepid and lacking in quality. Well, that's unfair on Djeidi Gassama. He looks a threat and looks like a very useful addition.
Furthermore, I have some sympathy for Danilo. He's working hard and has yet to receive the support or a clear-cut chance in three matches.
I'm leaving Kieran Dowell to last because he should never be near this Rangers side. He's not got the quality or the drive to be playing for this club, never mind on the right wing.
Hopefully, the signing of Mikey Moore and the arrival of Oliver Antman mean that Dowell will no longer occupy that position. Let's be honest, he should be out the door come the end of the transfer window, along with several others.
We shall see how the team reacts against Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox because we need a marked improvement from both players and the manager.
posted 2 weeks, 2 days ago
Rangers seem to have this problem every season, you keep discussing Tavernier and players attitudes, no matter the manager.
Big problems at Rangers and the seasons just begun, happy days
posted 2 weeks, 2 days ago
We just need to hope Plzen can’t finish. We have given up >50 chances in our first three games.
I do think we have to be patient because there is no way this current line up is close to what Martin wants. Aasgaard and Igamane still being out is a major frustration.
Think it’s far too early to start Antman but expect to see him off the bench.
All the grit and determination that got us through against Pana evaporated in the second half against Motherwell and Martin already has a job keeping players onside.
To be fair Raskin has gone from POTY to looking like a fish out of water. I am sure he isn’t comfortable or happy playing where he is playing. I think swapping Dio and Raskin would help.
The lack of balance in the team will only be sorted when Aasgaard is back and we sign a LCB and a LB.
The lack of attacking threat should change when Antman, Moore, Aasgaard are full up to speed and the CF situation is sorted.
I didn’t think we would be anywhere ready to get past Pana so whilst we are still very much undercooked anything can happen.
I’d start Aaron’s ahead of Tavs purely because we have brought him in to play RB and he hasn’t really had a chance. Some of Tavs defending has been woeful this season. Aaron’s may not be up to it but what’s the point of bringing him in if we aren’t going to give him a chance in his right position.
As for Martin I agree that I don’t really think he is what we needed right now. He isn’t proven enough at doing what he’s trying to do for me. But he’s here and he needs time. Unfortunately I think he’s going to need 6-8 weeks to really get us going.
In the meantime we just need to get results any way we can.

So we’ve had three managers in short succession all having a go at the players attitude. You can question Martin’s tactics and decisions, but just ridiculous to say the players, and specifically the captain and top players can get away with it time and time again without any blame.
Nonsense to continue sacking managers and continue backing same players.
posted 2 weeks, 2 days ago
My concerns are more about the manager and his system than the players at the moment. I think that's what's causing the performances.
Butland has performed well, of course consistency is his issue but for now. It's fine.
Depth at RB, no matter what order you fancy them in. Djiga looks very promising, Souttar has been good in our league for years always prone to a daft mistake but generally good. Balance is the issue here at the moment with Jefte not fancied as 1st choice, and no LCB so surely the next 2 signings we make.
Midfield he had two really good players, he's added Rothwell who looks like another. Aasgaard on paper is exciting, Cameron and Barron good squad players. Bajrami as one who has talent but yet to really show it consistently. As a more typical midfield 3 we would be looking quite healthy if we had Raskin and Rothwell as the base with plenty of options to change it.
Gassama looks a big talent as does Antman, with Moore, Curtis and Cortes to back them up, you've got quick young dynamic wingers.
Up top Igamane who could be top class, Dessers who for all his faults gets goals. Danilo finally gets a chance and we can't get the ball to him I'd probably like to see him or Dessers or both be replaced but still 3 players who should be enough.
We're a LB, LCB and probably a replacement striker away from having our squad. With that, in a Gerrard style system I'd be feeling really positive. It's this system or at least the teething issues with it that's the big issue for me.

Apart from Motherwell he has got results so far.
And in the first half we were very much in control. If we had the likes of Igamane, Moore, Aasgaard and Antman available against Motherwell I’d be confident we would have been further ahead in the first half.
The second half we transformed into the Rangers that got Clement sacked. Martin tried to change the personal in game to address it, unfortunately guys like Baron, Bajrami, Cortez are inconsistent and not at the level of peak Rothwell, Raskin and Dio.
That second half mentality shift clearly alarmed Martin and he’s right - it wasn’t tactical at all.
Martins most questionable decisions are not necessarily the way he’s playing right now it’s the players he’s got out of position that are clearly struggling.
Dowell should be gone as soon as the new guys are up to speed. In the short term I’d rather have Curtis on the right instead. Raskin should be shifted now and a poor Jefte is no worse than Aaron’s at LB.

What has Aarons done to deserve playing RB over Tavernier?
He's been the most pash of any player, Aarons should be benched and fill in at RB when Tav isn't fit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aarons has done well in the one or two minutes he’s been on the right hand side, starting the Gassama goal against Pana.

I don't think that was aimed at Tavernier, i've never thought he had a poor attitude. I think that was aimed at Diomande or perhaps Raskin.

Not really, had the odd few mins as a RW but mainly when he's not RB he's CB.
At CB he's done well.

Tav hasn’t been better defensively, he’s been worse. Aarons has made more mistakes, but those have all been on the ball, bar one I can remember where he was slow to get back and not strong enough after a Souttar mistake.
Tav has been better on the ball, how would Tav do on the left hand side though
I agree that he was talking about other players. But you’ve avoided the question, the team gave an attitude and mentality issue, and you do not think blame falls at the captain?

Martin will very quickly lose the fans if he doesn’t make changes. Can’t make comments like he did on Saturday without backing that up. His team selection has also cost us.
Putting Antman in for Dowell, Jefte to lb and Aarons to rb would solve a couple issues straight away by giving us a natural left footer and an outball.
Agree with what your saying on Raskin, think Cameron however will come in for one of Dio or Raskin. Again Martin could help things by simply switching Dio and Raskin.

he can run, tav cant anymore. He is struggling big time but his use of the ball is good. I agree ideally I would ahve Aarons ahead of Tav. Aarons has looked far far more comfortable to the two times he has moved to the right

No i don't.
