My mum and her mother had absolutely no idea about cooking. A combination, I think, of 1) English working classes losing their connection with the land and its food traditions due to the scale and early onset of industrialisation, and 2) scarcity of ingredients in my grandmother's wartime generation; obviously rationing ended in the 1950s but post-war generations hadn't grown up associating food with joy and variety. If you hang out with French or German people who stayed with English families on school exchange trips, the first thing they'll mention is being traumatised by the horrific food they were fed. I left home in the 90s with no cooking skills, nor any real sense of eating as something to take pleasure in. Since then we've seen the variety of foods in restaurants and supermarkets explode. I'm much more knowledgeable about food now than my mum, and my kids (thanks to YouTube) are better at cooking than I am.
During summer hols, most days we use to go out and play footie after brekkie, home for lunch, more footie, dindins, then more footie. Occasionally mix it up with other sports / activities.
Do kids still do that - they mostly seem to stay in these days.
And you would go round to your mate's house not knowing if they were home or not

There are lots of European cities where renting is affordable and owning property isn't. Where I live rental prices are often higher than mortgage repayments for the same kind of property. Of course most people would rather have an asset than not, but overall, I guess a lot of people would happily spend a smaller % of their income on accommodation, and from that point of view the UK isn't one of the better places to be.

I remember last time on hol in Berlin, a guide was saying that there wasn't as strong an urge to own your own house like in some other countries.
We're sort of talking about different things to be fair. Buying (and selling) in desirable German cities can be more costly than renting over the very long term. So yes due to some very specific factors in Germany the financial side of things along with current rental protections mean it makes more sense for a lot of people.
Would they rather own a home for the same or similar price as renting, of course.
When they need to retire they will be relying on more state support, savings and pension than those who own and just because that support is there now doesn't mean it will be in a few decades. The UK and other English speaking western nations have led the way in failed housing policy, it would be naive to assume Neoliberalism won't ruin places like Germany next.
House prices are just ridiculous in the UK. We're doing something round here though to bring them down with high Council Tax premiums and rules around owning second homes/holiday lets etc.

This. Multiple ownership of houses should be highly restricted to control rent prices. People own to rent because rent is higher than owning monthly. If they control it, hopefully it will reduce rent prices (without reducing the urge to develop, a fine line I am assuming)

Full disclosure. I own two houses. One I live in and one I rent out. The one I rent out though is rented out for much lower than market rent to a local person and when I sell it'll be sold to someone, possibly the son/daughter of a friend, who is looking for an affordable first house.

Sometimes you got to play the game. Not everyone wants to buy, so there has to be a rental market out there. I'm not sure if there are many people out there who own loads of houses which are sitting empty, not available for rent and aren't for 'income purposes'.
I think if you aren't using other own properties for income purposes, you should be heavily taxed on it, as there isn't any need for it

Guess this is a bit basic but I always thought you should only be allowed a second home if you build it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This. Multiple ownership of houses should be highly restricted to control rent prices. People own to rent because rent is higher than owning monthly. If they control it, hopefully it will reduce rent prices (without reducing the urge to develop, a fine line I am assuming)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Full disclosure. I own two houses. One I live in and one I rent out. The one I rent out though is rented out for much lower than market rent to a local person and when I sell it'll be sold to someone, possibly the son/daughter of a friend, who is looking for an affordable first house.

Or even more exciting, Nick is going to some shopping centre with his mum to get a new game for his speccy 48k, do you want to come too??

House prices are just ridiculous in the UK. We're doing something round here though to bring them down with high Council Tax premiums and rules around owning second homes/holiday lets etc.
