Depends in what sort of way you like him.
I'm not surprised that he's a turned out to be a good pundit. For someone of such average-to-low technical ability to have had such a good career in football shows that he must have had a very good football brain and knowledge of the game to compensate, along with a strong work ethic and desire.
As for all that nonsense as a player, I guess being so committed to Utd and being so partisan was part of his job. We moan when players look like they don't care so we shouldn't knock those who do seem bothered about what they do and who they play for. He did take things a bit too far at times but then we'd have loved it if he was one of ours doing the same thing; look how we got behind Adebayor after his pitch-length run and slide!
I think as long as he's fair and impartial in his post-playing career as a pundit - which he is - then I have no reason to dislike him.
He has surprised me since he retired from playing, very knowledgeable and quite humerous.
But it's still wrong to like him, too early yet.
Give him another 5 years and I will have a rethink.
At the Manchester Derby he took the whupping like a man. Wonder how he would have behaved if it had been the other way around?
As a pundit I like him. He is reasonably unbiased and actually says some interesting stuff. 100 times better than Jim Beglin, Jamie Redknapp, Alan Smith ...
I've been quietly impressed with him as a pundit as well. Not that I see much of him as I don't have Sky, but I thought he handled himself very well in the derby, even with a numpty next to him doing his best to goad him into siding with his old employer.
He's a damn sight more impartial than Steve Bruce, who uses every opportunity to have another quick massage on Fergie's ego.
GN was a United fan (Still is) and hence when he played for the club you was just a fan who was super lucky to play for his boyhood team, every little kids dream. Therefore it follows that he was and should have been a loyal player.
In these times when we slate players for their lack of loyalty it was refreshing to have a player like that, like him or not, he was for 10-12 year the best RB in the prem. He might not have been the most skillful, but he was committed, hard working, a team player, was never out on the booze (or not in the press for it) and was always up for a battle and I think you might find that most managers will see all those qualities as a real asset.
His move to a pundit has been pretty good, again like him or not he is balanced and he clearly has a good football brain. When you compare him to a bloke like Mike Summerbee I think GN fronts up pretty well.
As a player, yes. As a pundit, no.
But dennis its a bit of an unfair comparison tbh, if you start realing out stuff about Mike a more fair comparison would be that scotts geezer who just got an award for being old. Whotsisface paddy.
If your comparing him to a fan of similar age and punditry lets use the even playing field of Dixon V Neville. Think they both scrub up rather well.
I see where you are coming from with Mike Sumerbee, he wont have a bad word said about City. Paddy Crerand is Uniteds equivalent to Sumerbee, very similar in his biased, unbalanced view of the game.
LEE1PEN beat me to my comment, i am too slow on the keyboard.
Crerand and NeVILE........cloven hoofed ones...arrrrgh
Summerbee was a guest for the day, he wasn't trying to persue a career as a pundit. If Sky thought he was after a job then they wouldn't have set him up by screening misleading stats.
I think Gary Neville is an excellent pundit
I don't see it myself. I don't mind him as a bloke when he is doing his punditry, however I don't find his analysis particularly insightful.
I think that people are surprised that, after being so partisan and rightfully so when playing for United, he can come across as a decent bloke without that obvious bias.
I don't think that makes him a good pundit though, just better than expected. In terms of who is a good pundit, I find that question more difficult to answer!
Let's face it, we all love it when a player who plays for our club clearly loves our club. As some who isn't a fan of United, that's about as good a reason to hate Neville as any!
Agree with Melton he doesn't bring anything new to the analys side of the job, but he isn't rabidly biased which suprised me a bit.
Very wrong,an utterly hateful man is the Neville creature
i don't like him and never will.
it is good to watch him squirm at times especially at the derby
"however I don't find his analysis particularly insightful. "
Same could be said of most pundits, to be fair.
Really am suprised by Gary Neville his praise of man City has been excelent so far, let's hope he keeps it up.
I use to work with his dad many moons ago a nice lad.
Agreed leo, I was struggling to name a decent pundit. Most of the ones I prefer are journalists rather than TV, and tend to not be people who made their name actually playing a game.
There is a question for you, which ex player has made the best pundit?
I rate Lee Dixon as a pundit.
Gareth Southgate is not bad, Marcel Desailly talks sense.
