your damn right he was, people wouldnt be even questioning that he was in anyway wrong at all if this idiot fan was found to have a knife on him, I would have done the same, a completely unprovoked attack from the fan

to me it looked like the guy was going for the keeper...

is the keeper supposed to stand there and let this guy hit him (or worse) or stand his ground and behave pro-actively?

im with the keeper on this...

I'd have hit him too!

His sending off was because the fool was on the floor when he kicked him twice, had he not done that I don't think he would have been sent off, the initial bit where the buffoon goes down was reasonable.

..........

if i thought someone was going to attack me from behind (equally as cowardly) and i thought there was a risk they could have stabbed me...feet would be connecting with heads im afraid...

have to agree with reebok....the thing is though was the manager right to pull off his players ?

I would've just said "I'm gonna bum you". That would've sent him packing.

harj

I'm not disputing the keeper was right to defend himself, but he then goes on to kick the fool when he's laying on the floor.

That second action in my opinion got him sent off.

Just come up on Sky that they've rescinded his red card!

and im not justifying kicking someone when they are down, but these Dutch fans can be a bit dangerous. what if he hadn't kicked him and the guy would have got back up and stabbed him?

like i said...risk to my life, i will do whatever i can to stop the guy getting back up.

i know it sounds harsh but its you or them.

of course, he may not have had a knife...so all this is hypothetical - however, he could have.

Reebok

Coming from Bolton, you would probably have seen the incident as a typical prelude to courting

I totally condone what the keeper did, if he had a bottle or knife he clda caused a lot of injuries, shame he dint land a kick to the head, then agen one across the mid section wld do, it shdnt have been a red, game shda got halted for 6/7 minutes and then let to resume, poor keeper wlda needed eyes in the back of his head tho to feel at ease

Balls to sent off, I would've had him arrested.

And the decision to overturn the red card is disgusting.

Why are footballers above the law?

posted on 22/12/11

He may have acted in defense at first but to then kick him when he's down is just wrong.

I'm not condoning what the fan did either BTW.

Y'know what, I overreacted. Sorry.

Arrested is too harsh but sent off is right.

Having seen half the incident, I think the keeper was restrained, kicking at the guys legs and it looked quite tame. Now if he had kicked him in the head or torso that would have been different.
Remember the tennis player who got stabbed.
This kind of fan will cause the re-introduction of fences.

Clap him in irons and transport him to Australia!! Eh Tall!

Simply, the Laws of the Game provide that a player is sent off if he strikes or attempts to strike an opponent, a teammate, team officials, a spectator or any other person.

The referee did the right thing (he has no choice) and we might all agree the Dutch FA also did the right thing by rescinding the card due to the circumstances.

Spectators have no business being on the field.

It's simply a case of the **** hitting the fan!

Pretty harsh to call the keeper that Eric, shame on you!

posted on 23/12/11

Aye, that's as maybe. But you're the ref, I call him a name, you'd send him off possibly shatter his dreams!!

posted on 23/12/11

If you called him a name, why would I, as the ref, send him off?
