Cantona, to give a team a bit of magic in a central attacking area that has at times been found wanting.

Keane was the first name that sprung to mind too. Right now I think nothing could be more useful than a midfielder who is a leader who has both aggression and footballing intelligence.

But since you got there first, I'll go for a more controversial one. Juan Sebastian Veron. He was a superb player who came to United at the wrong time. I reckon a Veron in his prime would slot into our midfield beautifully today. I've been boring people on this site for ages with the opinion that we could do with a mobile, inventive deep-lying 'conductor': someone like Scholes in 2007 or Modric now. Veron could do that job - and I think he'd be an upgrade on Modric.

I have my doubts about Veron in a 2 man midfield, to me he was never a deep player, he was an AM that was converted to deep playmaker in his 30s when he was less mobile.

Robbie Fowler for me. We'd be right in the mix if we had him as he was in his prime. By the way, Veron is a wind up right? He's got be to be your biggest ever flop, surely?

either Xabi Alonso, or the proper Fernando Torres from 3 years ago.

Ian Rush

Even when we were playing badly he would snap up the only chance of the match.

Ian Rush for me as well

We need that goalscorer.

Although I'd also put a case forward for John Barnes. We could really use his trickery and imagination in midfield.

Being as our midfield is so pathetic I'd take Keane back in a heartbeat !!! Or even a younger Scholes but I think Keane would sort our pansy wimpy midfield out.

Rush never had the injuries Fowler had.

Which is a point in Rush's favour.

Rush probably looked after himself more than Fowler!! Still Robbie for me, think he was more naturally gifted with more variety to his game. Seeing as we're in fantasy land I'll have Robbie with no injuries please!!

David Speedie - Beardsley's replacement!

He'd probably get in the side supplying the lethal Paul Stewart.
