Could spell big trouble down south. Which IMO is well over due. The EPL money has all but ruined the game here.

deBear, didn't we seek assurances from someone before using them? Astounding if we didnt seek knowledgable info before using them.

Well, I thought the bubble would burst down there eventually but it's not looking likely.

Used to work with a Newcastle fan - ticket prices there even 10 years ago were unbelievable

But they're still going strong - sometimes I wonder jst how fragile m

Ath,

Taliking to the finance manager in my work ANC my big mate (an accountant with Scottish Power and a Celtic season ticket holder - a proper Kerrydale accountant )

They can't understand why Rangers alone are liable....

Often when the EBT think is disscussed it has been said Celtic also used them but stopped near enough as soon as they had.
Surely this indicates there was advice about at the time that they were toxic. The small world of Scottish business it seems highly unlikely Rangers were unaware of Celtic dumping this tax strategy. So they conciously decided to take the risk .

deBear, do you know if Rangers are the only Scottish club using them(have used)?

EBT's are widely known as tax avoidance mechanisms

When the tax case is finally settled I think there will be some startling figures as to how much Rangers were actually paying some players.

scotscelt

My son told me van Bronckhurst was just under £8mil for the relatively short time here, though don't know if it's just speculation.

ath Some of the experts that have been used by the papers and tele etc since the st v masacare ( couldnt resist )say EBT's in themselves are not illeagal but if not used correctly they do cross the line into tax evasion rather than tax avaoidance.

How long was that over for van bronkhorst ?

If HMRC can prove that a players wage was paid through it then it's illegal. So it would come down to paperwork contracts payments made from uk and offshore.

THats basically what they were saying rab

This is the thing, mate, the legal/illegal aspect. It's where I'm lost with all this.

If the contracts that King says HMRC have evidence of exist then I think the odds are in their favour re the tax case.

So, does an EBT have to come through as living expenses; rent, utility bills etc., rather than a wage/salary?

Whose favour, SC?

posted on 16/2/12

Prob most of us will be lost over it but if there's a paper trail they'll find it. Also the individuals are and can be held responsible as well so it's not just Rangers but everybody paid through EBT who will be s hittin it. That's why I reckon martin bain clammed up about finances and took his settlement

To be honest ath it sounds kind of vague even when these guys are explaining it.
From what I can gather it sounded like a way of ussing it succesfully is to pay a lump sum at termination or a one of up etc. that flies but if it is used in a regular payment basis it aint .
Hows that for fancy financial lingo

I think I remember reading something back when this all started that the players had it written into the "contracts" they were not liable. Its a tangled weaved web alright
