Yeah but why should he give up over £2m a year when he can sit it out and keep the cash rolling in.
Footballs a business now and no doubt many players would do the same to safeguard their future after the game ends for them.
it is what it is a rumour, I cannot believe any player with only 1 year left on his contract is willing to take a wage cut, when he can ride it out then move on to another club with a signing on fee to boot, so he could be injury free & totally free to leeds. still don't want him then

alot to greedy footballers
WW, I doubt Smithy has 38 million in the bank though.
I can't blame him for not wanting to go from 60k to 15k a week, although, if Newcastle were to pay half and told him explicitly he won't feature in the first team I'd be disappointed if he didn't accept the offer, especially as he is supposedly a Leeds Fan as well.

It's all paper talk though isn't it? None of us know the ins and outs of the deal and knowing Bates we never will - if it happens.
Yeah but say he has squandered a lot and has 5 or so million in the bank. It's a big difference and he doesn't have too many years left. He isn't going to earn this much ever again. Whereas in a years time there will still be teams willing to pay him 10-15k, fitness considered obviously.
