Us United fans have been having a bit of debate this morning about Rooney and his merits. Some think he's world class where as others - me - would class him as a very good player but not world class. The basis for this being that I think the word "World Class" is banded about too much and in the current market only Messi can be deemed world class, with Ronaldo and Iniesta potential other candidates.
Rooney and the world class tag was always something I associated with over hyped lazy journalism but I'm open to putting this out there and gaging what people really think about Wayne and his footballing abilities.
Is Rooney World Class

Benzema is not a better player than Rooney. He is a top player though. He plays in a stellar team, top heavy with talent. Madrid have not been poor. They have just had a bad few weeks - not six weeks.
Sometimes i wonder if people here watch football or other leagues or just inflammatory BS.

VC. I wouldn't put half of them anywhere near the category of a Maradonna or a Cruyff. To explain, by my definition of world class you're probably talking only twenty players in the last fifty years. In which case Messi and Ronaldo possibly are the only two who could fall in to that category.

If you would have said that to begin with, most people would have agreed, but told you that's not exactly the definition of world class. I don't believe for a second that's what you meant though.
World class simply means you are one of the best in the world, in the elite bracket, and for what he does, the position he plays, he offers something very different to others in the game. He is world class, doesn't mean you have to be as good as Messi or Ronaldo.

I think most on here watch highlights at the most, and go by what they hear in the media about it.
Benzema is a very good player, great link up, very direct he's strong and a good finisher. In terms of strikers he's up there with the likes of Gomez and RVP this season.

Of course it wasn't
He could have just done a thread about what constitutes world class in his opinion and maybe included a few players in there
He singled out Rooney, indeed, he used Rooney in the title when he could have used any player. Why Rooney? Why not Valencia? Nani? Vidic?
Answer should be obvious

Rooney doesn't play well but will score the odd goal - this is bad.
Rooney plays well but doesn't score - this is also bad.

Spot on
The season before he scored 34 goals, people used to say he was fantastic, but didn't score enough goals
The following season he played furthest forward and became known as a tap-in merchant and why doesn't he score more long range shots like he used to
This season he is playing deeper again, scoring long and short range goals for fun and now its 'Yeah he scores but.....
It's ridiculous
He's played out on the left and even as a deep lying midfielder this season too
The OP said on another thread he wouldn't care if he left. It's mind boggling to ne that someone fails to appreciate what Rooney does for United. He is pivotal to pretty much everything we do
Perhaps some would prefer 50m man Torres or 35m Carrol

Interestingly enough out of your list the only ones I haven't seen play live is Maldini. And even then I might have? Just doesn't stand out.

Maldini doesn't stand out?
Are you for real?
-------------------
I just shook my head when I read that
Seems to me that only goal scoring forwards who can dribble make the grade as WC. Here's me thinking he's been watching Rio and Vidic regularly in their prime. Both World Class and anyone who doesn;t think the best midfielder in the world of the last 20 years, a certain Paul Scholes, hasn't been World Class then words fail me. Even Zidane said he was the best

Macca
This kid is a WUM. Not a United fan by any stretch of imagination.
Not even a football fan if he thinks Scholes was never world class.
And as for Maldini not standing out, that is quite possibly one of the most stupid comments I have ever seen on any internet forum.
I would probably say Maldini was the best defender in world football over the last twenty years.

Nah
Agger, Skrtel and Carragher were better than Maldini. Just ask TOOR
