Interesting interview on the Telegraph today...

On Rooney replacing Scholes:
Ferguson said Scholes was being “very generous" in saying Rooney can fill his role. “He is underestimating himself and the value he had to us. Wayne could play centre midfield, but not the way that Scholesy played it. They are too different. “The way that Wayne would play as opposed to Scholesy is that he would be more dynamic and all over the place, using his energy to run everywhere and challenge, hit those cross-field passes that he is terrific at. “But Scholes was more calculated and he always had that control about him, controlling the speed and pace of a game, which is pretty difficult to do. He was an absolute one-off. “You can’t replace players like that. You hope you can find something approaching it, but you will never replace Paul Scholes."
On Sneijder/any old midfielder:
Ferguson refused to discuss the possibility of prising Sneijder from Inter. “There is nothing on the horizon with that, so we just carry on with the players that we have," he said. “Everybody is searching for the special player who makes the difference to his team, but we have more-than-capable midfield players, so we will carry on."
On Hernandez:
“He [Hernandez] is not going to change from what he is. He is as good a player I have ever dealt with in the penalty box, in terms of movement, space and decision making. He is brilliant with those qualities. “He might even improve on that next year, but where he does need to improve is the technical bit. He is doing that all the time, though."
He does not seem to view the pair as his definitive partnership:
“I don’t see that as a partnership," Ferguson said. “Wayne could probably do it with anybody.

I agree with Fergire RE: Rooney. Much more devastating in the final third than in the middle third.
As for our strikers, we have depth but I wonder if we could say there is genuine quality there. 2 unknown quantities in Welbeck and Macheda, a has-been in Owen and Berbatov's issues are well documented. Rooney remains a class act when fit, and whilst Hernandez remains an excellent goal scorer I am glad the staff at OT have recognised his issues as a player and are working on it.
The search for a midfielder is ongoing it would seem....
Fergie on Rooney, Hernandez and Sneijder

I'm glad to see Fergie has been taking heed of my comments on the subject of Rooney on this board.
Joking aside, I think those comments about what Scholes provided validate the argument that we should be or are looking for a midfield 'conductor' more than a goal-scoring, attacking midfielder.

I still think we need a central midfielder that adds some sort of goal threat, because lets be honest, the options we have available at the moment in central midfield don't offer much goal threat if any.

Mozi
Scholes was not that prolific a goal threat.

Goals are always a bonus but I reckon from the point of view of team balance, if we're playing two wingers plus Hernandez and Rooney, the priority for our central midfielders has to be possession and breaking up attacks. Let's not forget that a lot of teams only play one striker these days and frequently play three in the middle. So really instead of having a third central midfielder with licence to get forward, we have Rooney in the team with a bit more defensive responsibility than the traditional number 10.
If we had a fantasy footballer next to Carrick or Fletcher we'd be exciting going forward but seriously exposed on the counter attack.

Rooney has got a terrible first touch – not so bad when you lose the ball on the edge of the opposition's box, much more serious when you lose it on the halfway line.

Looking at united from the outside all you guys need IMO is a decent playmaker. You have strength all lover the pitch bar midfield where I think you are lacking a quality footballer, you have some game midfielders who will run and tackle just need someone with that little bit extra, other then that you are fine, or are any of you worried about O'Shea and Browne leaving? You could always rely on them to perform when needed.
