I'm glad to see Fergie has been taking heed of my comments on the subject of Rooney on this board.
Joking aside, I think those comments about what Scholes provided validate the argument that we should be or are looking for a midfield 'conductor' more than a goal-scoring, attacking midfielder.
I still think we need a central midfielder that adds some sort of goal threat, because lets be honest, the options we have available at the moment in central midfield don't offer much goal threat if any.

Scholes was not that prolific a goal threat.

Goals are always a bonus but I reckon from the point of view of team balance, if we're playing two wingers plus Hernandez and Rooney, the priority for our central midfielders has to be possession and breaking up attacks. Let's not forget that a lot of teams only play one striker these days and frequently play three in the middle. So really instead of having a third central midfielder with licence to get forward, we have Rooney in the team with a bit more defensive responsibility than the traditional number 10.
If we had a fantasy footballer next to Carrick or Fletcher we'd be exciting going forward but seriously exposed on the counter attack.
Rooney has got a terrible first touch – not so bad when you lose the ball on the edge of the opposition's box, much more serious when you lose it on the halfway line.
Looking at united from the outside all you guys need IMO is a decent playmaker. You have strength all lover the pitch bar midfield where I think you are lacking a quality footballer, you have some game midfielders who will run and tackle just need someone with that little bit extra, other then that you are fine, or are any of you worried about O'Shea and Browne leaving? You could always rely on them to perform when needed.
