The Premier League Bargain Basement Summer!

There's been lots of talk about the possible 'big' transfers to come this summer. £30 million here, £35 million there. Even a striker we don't need for £50 million!

So, given the unlikelyhood that we'll sign 5 top class, £30m players this summer, I'd thought we'd see which players we might pick up from the PL for cheap (less than £20m though preferably less than £15m) and in needed positions. I'll start with a couple of basic assumptions:

1. The area we need most investment will be CM.
2. The area we are being heavily linked to big investment is CM and LB (Shaw - sorry MuDD)
3. Apart from the above, we'd ideally need a RB, CB and L or RW.
4. Most of us have not seen the likes of Carvalho, Benatia, Mangala or any of these names play much if at all.

So that leaves us with RB, CB and a wide position to fill, on the cheap, and from the PL (because we've probably actually seen them play). You get 2 choices maximum per position, and you can choose your positions. And they have to be somewhat realistic targets! As stated, i'm opting for RB, CB and a wide player.

RB:

1) Mathieu Debuchy - Would be cheap, is at a good age, tireless and good going forward. A French international who would provide good cover for Rafael during his inevitable injuries and good enough to step into the first team.

2) Seamus Coleman - Would be more expensive but is excellent going forward, quick, tireless and arguably a better player than Rafa. More of a pipe dream than the first option.

CB:

1) Fabricio Coloccini - Would be very cheap, is a good, experienced defender and would help the transition from the departure of Vidic (and possibly Rio). He's not so good or so young that he'd hinder the development of a potentially fruitful partnership between some of our younger CB's but good enough that he could form a partnership himself or come in as cover when needed.

2) Dejan Lovren - Had a great season with Southampton but would cost more than Coloccini. One of the more obvious choices, like Coleman.

RW/LW:

1) Kevin Mirallas - Quick, direct, tricky and can get goals and assists. Wouldn't cost the earth and is an upgrade on Valencia and Young. Would add a bit of excitement and unpredictability to the flanks. Can play on both sides.

2) No second choice, difficult position to pick from in the PL.

These aren't who i think we'll go for, or who i'd like us to go for necessarily. It's more a bit of fun and an extension of SE85's thread about not all signings having to be big money transfers.

Over to you....

RR

I said throughout Moyes' time that this was not a black and white issue and we needed a major overhaul and some players needed the boot (not to say Moyes was in any way blameless).

If this squad couldn't step up for a little honeymoon with Giggs as manager, with nothing to play for, it is clear that the rot is deep.

Ji, yeah I'd move Valencia on in a shot.

Even though I don't rate Young, he's still better than Valencia.

Will be interesting to see whether we go for a new winger or Van Gaal tries to improve Adnan and Nani.

RR,

Our points average for Giggs' 4 games was 1.75 per game. Moyes' 34 in charge was 1.68 per game.

It clearly wasn't all Moyes to blame, the squad is in poor shape but a good manager can mask some of that. Giggs and Moyes are not that manager.

They've done really well this season... They'll be looking to push for playoffs.

I heard the chairman was a bit cautious about trying for promotion, this season gone. Not sure if there is any truth in that, but they eased off the gas whenever they came within touching distance.
